HINTS ON CITY BEAUTIFUL. ... It is said that the eyes are the index to the humaa aoul and that windows, are . eyes to the houses of the world, it la certain, however, that the windows of the homes are too often an unfailing? Index of the quailties of their owners. Nothing adds more to the appearaaoe of a street than rows of houses with windows well and tastefully arranged. If you go into a home which has dirty windows, with bedraggled curtains and shades either mtsHinn; or awry, you will be more than likely to find stmtlar conditions existing inside. The well groemcd house that well painted and repaired looks badly if Its windows are dirty or its windows inharmoaious Insofar as their draperies are concerned. The mala factors In the upkeeplns; of one's windows are oap nnd water
and a little time. It Is bard sometimes to keep . .oae's window curtains clean, especially at a time of the year
when It is necessary to have the windows open all the time, but it does not tax the pocketbook
verjr greatly to have two nets of curtains that one may ehange
rretiueal 1 y. Screens, too, play
an important part in this matter of appearance. If they are left 1 jiUK around carelessly all winter they will present a very poor front in the summer. They should be kept carefully and prevented from rusting by oiling at times and wrapping away 4 in some sort of covering. Peopie too often stick in their screens as a necessary evil wit Uout regard at all to their ap-
pea ranee. It is surprising, too,
how often people put in screens with boles In them. They say:
0, well, it is only a little one." They forget that a little hole will admit as many Insects aa a large one.

(Special to Thb Times.) East Chicago, July 6. Harry Surra
of Olahoma has come to the conclusion that it does not pay to go too far for
a friend. Harry has a friend nam.-d
Charlie Stick, also of Oklahoma. Stick got into the toils on Sunday last, charged with Sabbath desecration.
Surra getting word of the fact went to
pay a friendly call on Stick. He took
with him his friend's coat and hat
which he asked permission to hand him.
Sergeant McCormick opined that he would do the handing ' himself, and
Surra left the jail Intent upon raising
?2d wherewith to extricate his friend from the dungeon vile. During his ab
sence Snergeat McCormick unfolded
the coat an dfound therein a nice cold
bottle of beer. This he placed upon his desk and when Chief Lewis came in the
first thing he spied was the beer. Chief
asked the wherefore of the beer and

hurra returne din due coure, turned
over the twenty-five simoleons, and was then told he was under arrest. It was
then Stick's turn to raise an equal
amount for his friend. But alas, where ever he went he got the same story. No
body had any loose change about their
persons, and the result was that Surra
languished in prison all of the glorious Fourth. He was comorted by Leo Mc-
Cormic who philosophically remarti that his confinement in Jail might be
the means of saving his life. "Why
said the sergeant," you might be hit
with a stray bullet on a day when
there is so much shooting."
When the trials came up yesterday
