(Special to The Times.)

Indiana Harbor, Ind., July 1. All of

the better class stores of this city

will close Wednesdays and Fridays

during the months of July and August at" 6 o'clock. This was decided at a

meeting of the Indiana Harbor Retail Merchants' association held recently in the Auditorium, when this question and a number of other minor matters came up. The question of closing two nights a week at this early hour has been thrashed over on several occasions by the association, and it was with some opposition that the organlzatn finally wn he dy for the early clong project. "This decision is finall," said one of the members, "so far. as the merchants of the better class are concerned. No matter what some of the others do, we will stick together on this. We do not expect any serious inroads will be made in our trade, as, if any of the storekeepers keep open, it will only be the smaller ones. We feel that in

Justice to ourselves and to our help this

step is necessary." The members of the association hope to be backed up in their action by the public. j

Reports come from & large number

of mills in the Pittsburg district say

ing that they will close down for a ten

day period today. These reports were

looked upon with a serious aspect

when they were circulated, and it was

thought that many of the mills would

close down for an indefinite period.

As announced by Judge Gary before leaving lor Europe yesterday there will be no serious curtailment in any of.

the mills of the corporation. The ten-

day period of retrenchment in many

of the mills is for the purpose of mak

ing repairs, and it is a general rule

that many of the millsactually cease operation during the summer months

for that purpose. At the local mills open hearth fur nace No. 3 is down. Five blast fur

naces are in operation. One of these

which was put out of commission some time ago by an explosion, is being repaired. Another was "blown out" a

few days ago for re-llning, while the

eighth one, although practically com

Dieted, needs some additional touches

before it can be blown in.

The prospects never looked better at

the local mills. Orders have been is

sued to rush the work on the addition
