HAVE BIG FEISIG

(Special to The Trass.) East Chicago, June 29. Forty-five members of the police and fire departments with their guests the city officials, gathered around the festive board last night in attendance upon a banquet given by the police department in honor of the mayor and his official famiUThe banquet was held in the city .hall a vacant room on the northeast corner of the building having been converted into a banquet hall. The tables were arranged to form three

Chief Ben Flack and Assistant Chief

James Doherty. The fiowars were for the most part wild roses and balck eyed sus&ns which abound at this season In the vacant land throughout the Calumet region. The cold collation which was served, was gotten up by Barker and Sergeant McCormick. Captain Maraer and Fire Chief s Flack and Doherty, giving their assistance in the assembling of the component parts of the spread. Wet goods in abundance, but imbibed with gentlemanly moderation, had been donated by business men, and altogether the event was a complete snccess in every, particular. The banquet was the result of a usggestion made some time ago by Chief Lewis, following the policeman's ball. There was quite a fund remaining after the expenses of the ball were paid, and after the policemen's uniforms, the object of the event, had been bought. Chief Lewis suggested that out of the remaining fund a banquet be given and his idea was regarded as a good one and carried out. Previous to the ball an organization was formed for the purpose of giving this function and taking care of the fund raised thereby. Sergeant Hike Gorman was elected president of this, Sergeant Lee McCormick secretary and Sergeant Frank Barker treasurer. These will continue in office for the

current year and It was under the

PERHAPS A PARK BOARD.

Gary may also have a park board but as there are not many parks now park commissioners may not be In evidence for a few days. The board of public works will also be a fat thing. Gary's board will consist of the mayor, the city engineer and one commissioner of public works. It Is nnderstood that Street Commissioner Pat Flnerty is to be the third member of the public works board.

On the other hand the council can eliminate the board of - metropolitan police commissioners and create Instead pursuant to the acts of the legislature a board of public safety. This may consist of three members and It will have ln Its hands the management -of the police and fire departments. MAYOR VS. GOVERNOR. A. merry war Is promised on the city Judgeship proposition. It will serve to fan the old rivalry between the Knotts and Crolius faction. One statute gives the mayor the right to

appoint the Judge, while another statute says he governor has the power. Between such fool laws added weight is given to the governor's side by the state constitution hich vests in him the right to appoint Judges. Knotts may try to appoint Ora L Wlldermuth or Emmet White to the woolsack. It will not be Col. Mayo, as was originally planned, because the mayor and the venerable colonel have

had some spats of late. It is reported that Governor Marshall is taking an active interest In the doing of his declared enemy, the Mayor of Gary. The governor wants a better system of Justice in force and he will attend to the appointment himself. Consequently, any man who is close to Knotts may b eliminated from the list. Among the Crolius Democrats woh are in line for the Judgeship are Attorney Alvln O Donnell. C. O. Sefton. John Lyddiek and R. E. Houren. One of the four mentioned will probably be appointed by the gov-
