DEPOT INSTALLATION
IS AGAIN DELAYED Gary's $250,000 union depot was not opened for traffic today' as was intended.Neither will it be opened tomorrow. Delay in the installation of tha electric lights has caused -a postponment until July 1 when the event will be made a gala "wisinn. Officials of the two railroads making oint use of the Broadway station will be here f r6m '" the general offices 'of the Lake Shore and Michigan Central
and the Baltimore and Ohio railroads.
Steel corporation officials will also be present including a number of invited guests. When Gary was first planned Chairman Elbert H. Gary of the steel corporation advised the roads to erect a depot fit to grace a city of $200,000. The railroads were rather skeptical about such a statement at first, but later, they saw its wisdom. Even though the city's population is now $15,000 the indications are that the depot will be to small to accomodate the present crowds that will use it. Both roads have added more trains on the Chicago-Gary run in the last six months so great has been the traffic. One thing that the railroads did not figure on in their planning of the depot was that Gary would, outproportion any city of its present or future size as the Mecca for visitors. Plans for the caring of local traffic are well handlel but before three years have elapsed the depot will have to be enlarged as the transient ticket purchasers now number in the hundreds daily.
