(Special to The Times) East Chicago, Ind., May 27. Hal

ley's comet came near having another

calamity to its credit last night when

it just escapea being responsible lor a panic in Berry's theater. Fortunately

the . theater was not as crowded, as

usual, the performance being the last of the evening, and burst of applause

from the rear of the house, when a

whisper of Halley's comet reached their ears, and they realized that there was

no fire, put a quietus upon the incipient

panic.

It was just at the beginning of the

last performance when the advertise

ments were being flashed upon "the screen that Manager Wheener appeared at the rear exit and spoke in a low tone to some one in the front row. The

person he addressed got up quickly and

went to the door, followed by half

doien who were in his party. Others hurriedly arose and made a break for

the door, and others back of them fol

lowed suit, until half the house left their seats and crowded toward the lit

tle opening. A woman in the center of the house said "Fire," and while she did not shout the word, she said it loud enough for those near her to hear, and for a moment the seated patrons eyed

each, other, with blanched faces.

Then some one said, "It's Halley's comet," and a burst of applause saved

the situation.

WHY DO SOME COMPANIES MAKE ADVERTISED RATES? LISTEN! i

Simply because they think that they can lead the public to deal with them, and not to stop and think why are they doing so. and what induced them, and what they are paying and above all, what they are receiving for their patronage. We do not advertise any rates, but a call on us will set you to thinking before you go elsewhere. Let us Prove this. Companies that advertise Special Rates, such as $50.00 at $1.20 per week for 50 weeks, or give you Rebate Special inducements, are showing that if they cannot get the business in one way, they will get it in another. We do not believe in this. Why? Because it is not a very desirable way of gaining one patronage, and above all, tends to mislead the public into propositions that are not on the square, and leaves them many dollars behind at the end. IN OUR BUSINESS OF LOANING MONEY ON HOUSEHOLD GOODS. PIANOS. HORSES AND WAGONS. WE TELL YOU TO THE CENT WHAT ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY WILL COST YOU; WHAT THE REBATE WILL BE FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME PAID IN ADVANCE, AND PROVE TO YOU BEYOND A DOUBT WE ARE THE CHEAPEST. We are the largest and most reliable Company in Northern Indiana, and what we state we stand back of to the finish. ( CALUMET LOAN CO. 212 Hammond Building Phone 323 Opsn Every Evening
