POLICEMAN RAPPED

BY JACK JOHNSON

Jack Johnson, negro pugilist, caused

a stir In Judge Going's court yester

day when he assarted that Policeman

Flynn, who caused his arrest on March 30 on a speeding charge, had recently

requested the fighter to "slip him

something." Jack furnished the court

attaches with a bit of amusement when

"he folllwed up his first statement by

saying he did not understand the meaning of the term. Incidentally, he

won his case, which was tried by

Jury, and marks his second victory over

the Chicago police.

Mathematics were introduced by

Johnson's attorney with the hope of

showing up the policeman who had it

all figured out in minute form as to

how fast the defendant was traveling

at the time of his arrest.

Johnson repeatedly suggested ques

tions to his counsel and at one time drew from his pocket a gold stop-; watch and handed It to Flynn with a request that the latter show the court how it worked. The judge ruled this out, as he did a question hurled at the

bluecoat asking how long It would

take a man to travel a mile if he could

go 600 feet In twenty seconds.

Sig Hart, who was arrested at the

same time with Johnson, did not get

off as lucky as the pugilist. He was

assessed $10 and costs on a charge of using abusive language to Flynn.
