to have his' joke percolate, but . for a moment It looked as though it would have to be diagrammed.' Congressman ; Crumpacker leaned forward and whispi ered to a man near him that it was a

words were drowned la the storm of laughter and applause.

How Gary dot It.

The convention had been brought to

Gary through Gary having annexed

East Chicago, and the delegates yelled

their appreciation of the Joke. The

speaker then went on to say that Gary had not shown a great amount of in

terest in the primaries and attributed the lack of interest to the fact of perfect Harmony that prevailed within the

party. Ho complimented Congressman

Judge McMahan could decide the question in favor of East Chicago in spite

of the remonstrance, providing he is convinced that It would not be to the

injury of the cities of Hammond and

The fact should also be remembered

that the Lake circuit court will hear both sides of the question. Judge McMahan will not decide against annexation after hearing only Hammond's side of the question, as the Hammond Business Men's association did.

It is hinted that if the matter comes

to trial there may be some surprises in atore for the nammond city officials who went before an Indifferent public and secured signatures to the remonstrance.

What the motive Is

behind the publication of that application is hard to fathom. Only one reason has been advanced that seems feasible. That is that the applicant hopes to quietly prevent Mr. Binzen from securing his license after which be hopes to be able to operate the saloon here himself, or by the two applications for licenses to Involve them both ln such legal, complications that Binzen would loose his rights temporarily. This could only be attributed to a person with considerab malica or enmity, due to politics in all probability, against Mr. Binzen. The most generally accepted theory of the mat-

APPLICATION A JOKE Court Bailiff Denies That He Is Going to Operate a Saloon in Gary. With only two saloons permitted ln the first sub-division, that at the Binzenhof and the Gary hotel, it happens that two persons are applying for licenses to run a salon in the Gold mine, known as the Binzenhof, corner Fourth avenue and Broadway. The applicant in, addition to Mike Binzen, the lessee of the building, is Oscar Schmidt, generally believed to be the municipal court bailiff. The descriptions cf the location of

said that he did not Intend to run a

saloon ln Gary much less attempt to run one in the Binzenhof and that he could ln no wise explain the fact that his name was used ln the notice published for a license ln the Binzenhof.
