BEVERIDGE THE

KEYNOTE

Continued from Par On,) recognized by all that there is Just, bne main Issue In the campaign this year and that !s: shall Senator - Beveridg be re-elected to the United States Senate? In the face of this fact It was believed by the leaders that there was no need for a lot of speechmaking vhlch might complicate the situation. It was, of course, plain ' that it was up to Senator Beveridge to make the keynote speech, and .this was arranged. ' WILt, BE HUMMER. The Senator's speech has been prepared and H is eaid that it will be one of the strongest ever heard in a state

convention In this state.' Nothing is known of its contents,, even the Senator's most" intimate . associates and friends not having been given an insight into its make up. But those who have studied the" situation seem to believe that it will be. a strong effort and that . when Senator, ".Beveridge gets through speaking there will not be any doubfleft as what he means and what he stands for. ',,.. But more important, even, than the speech of Senator Beveridge at this time is the possible platform declarations on the matters at lesu. As has been stated before, there Is a diversity . of opinion as to -whether the platform should take a. decided stand one way or the other on the PaynerAJdrich tariff law. The' members of the resolutions committee which has in hand the making of the platform will be -chosen today by the various district -delegations after they arrive in this city. Each congressional district . will . have, one member of this committee, and much

the committee Is made up as given here the insurgents will be in control of the committee and win have the say in preparing the. platform declarations on the tariff as well as, bn other subjects. Thla,i of jcourse, Is" not.' ait ; official list, however," ah d -it may - be changed in some-places though it is : believed" -Co be a good guess on the membership of the committee with the exceptions of the districts In which it. is impossible at this time to make a predction as to the selector i Another matter that will cause" the resolutions committee much concern when it meets tonight to consider the

platform question is what to say on the temperance question. There is a strong element in the party , that be

lieves the platform should remain silent on this subject, and they give as thefr reason for this position that the temperance question is settled and . that there is no need for further agitation along that line. - They point to the fact that there is now on the statute books

of Indiana the strongest kind of law on J this subject. They say the local option 1 law. is there and that it has , been held constitutional by the supreme court. They point to the Moore remonstrance law and the Nicholson law and say that these In' connection with the local option law cover every point that could be covered by temperance legislation. The only thing" left, they say, would-be to declare In favor of state wide prohibition, and there is no possibility that such a declaration would be made by an state convention of either party except the prohibition party. One of the strongest supporters of this position is Charles Sefrit, of "Washington, .who has always been opposed to the local'option law." Sefrit believes there should not be any "declaration

groes were put on for a six-round bout. The men were to fight for what money the spectators tossed into the ring. By the time the fight was ready to start It was seen that there was only $4.15 to be fought for by the two men. One of the two negroes, whose name could not be learned, ' said that - he

would fight one round, and if his fighting satisfied the sports he was to receive more money and if not be would not go any further with th fight. MVCII BI.OOO SPILLED. That first round was one of the fastest and bloodiest that has ever been seen in this vicinity. . The fans went wild and there was enough money tossed Into the ring to make up a good sized purse. The fighters then started in for blood and there -was so much of it shed that those who had ringside seats were all Splattered up with gore. . y It is -understood that t ha Crystal Athletic club has promised to put on
