Wiille the policemen's fourth annual
ball at the Hammond Athletic club
rooms last night was second to no
previous social event for the general
good spirit of the occasion, it was nev
ertheless in a class by itself for its
decoration scheme. No ball room in
Hammond was ever more profusely dec
orated, nowhere was there ever .more riot of colors than at the ball room. The only regret about the whole affair is that all the splendor should pass away with the morning. Mayor Becker and Mrs. Becker lead the grand march, and were followed immediately by Chief Austgen and Mrs. Austgen. "Several hundred people fell in line and marched to the martial music of Elster's orchestra. . . Decoration Riot of Color. As the midnight hour approached those of the guests who desired were served with a luncheon, a section of the floor and one of the club rooms having been reserved as lunch rooms. The policemen themselves had charge of the whole floor and gave their first attention to the comforts and accommodation of their guests. The decorative feature of ' the hall was the big surprise of the evening. Garlands of seagrass, palms, streamers.
Japanese umbrellas and lanterns, flags Japanese umbrellas and lanterns, flags, bunting and banners hanging from covered every bit of the ceiling and wall space. The many lights which shone bright as ever were softened, however, by the color scheme. A big five-foot electric star In front of the club house lighted the way to the building, while another such an emblem, although somewhat smaller, decorated the north end of the hall. Spared So EipiMr. The whole cost a big amount of money, and much work on the part of the committee. A handsome sum of money was realized from the affair and this will be used as the nest egg for a policeman's fund to meet any emergencies which may arise In the future. By the splendid success of last night the Hammond police department has assured for itself deserving success for its future events. 1 The committees were as follows: Arrangement Emil Bunde, chairman; Oscar Borchert, secretary, Captain Fred Rimbach, treasurer; S. Trinen. Michael Herman and John Kunz. Reception committee Frank Shine, Charles. See and Herman Sliller. Floor committee John Kunz, Gus Hohman and Nicholas Einsele.
