BE Oi OF SPEAKERS

Mayor Becker will be one of the principal speakers next Saturday at a luncheon given by the City club in Chicago. Mayor Becker will discuss the question whether the United States government should open the sag channel into the drainage canal or not. He is, of course, decidedly in favor of the project, not only because he is convinced that it would be one of the greatest assets of this region, but also that the lake levelf of Lake Michigan would not b materially affected. He has given the subject much thought and study and will undoubtedly be able to present some incontrovertible facts and figures o nthe question.

J. R. Decker, supervisor of the signal system of Michigan Central rail

road, was In the city, today, where a

conference was held with General Tard Master Lamb, Division Engineer A. S.

Kent and Superintendent J. D. Sucese,

all of the' Monon railroad, regarding

the location of the new electric inter locker that is toe, built at the Hob.

t" II, was: decided that ; the new intSrlocker should be located practically on the loohdatlons built for the mechanical interlocker whicli it was proposed to build some time ago. The electric

interlocker. however, will not require

as "much space as the proposed mechan

ical Interlocker. -.

The electric interlocker will also add

greatly . to the appearanoe of the city,

for "the reason that all of the rods

and running gear used in the old plant

will be eliminated and inconspicuous wires will take their places.

Mr.; Decker informed Thb Timbb re

porter that the new interlocking tower would be built-of brick and concrete and will be an ornament to the city.

If will be in keeping with the way the

Michigan Central does things in Ham

mond. It is said that none of the other railroads ' wanted an electric interlocker. but the Michigan Central and JJickel Plate people demanded that the more modern plant be -put In. The new interlocker will-have a capacity of eighty levers, although there will be only forty-three active levers at the time of the installation of the plant. The work on the new Interlocker will begin next week, and it is expected that It will be ready by the" 1st of July if the working men have good luck. The installation- of tthe new interlocker will make possible the opening of the two extra tracks -of the Indiana Harbor Belt Tailroad, and will make it possible "for Gary & "Western trains to run through to Calumet Park.

The Lake county council last evening appropriated $75,000 for a new bascule bridge to cross the Calumet river -at Hohman street. TEe next step wNl be to advertise for bids, and it is possible that the work on. the new hridge can begin soon enough so that the abutments can-be put in this year. This will make it possible for the structural work to go- on "during . the winter and the bridge will be ready for traffic by next spring. The new bridge will be one of the. most modern in the City. It will be of the bascule type and will be operated by electricity.
