the Hammond Woman's club took place yesterday afternoon at the home ot Mrs. W. C. Belman In Qlecdale Park. The meeting was largely attended by- the" members who met early in the afternoon and listened to the program pre-1 pared for the : afternoon. The subject study was "In Old Virginia." by Thomas Nelson Page. Mrs. Edith, Griffin read a very enjoyable paper on "The Characteristics of the Works by Thomas Nelson Page" and Mrs. W. C Belman gave a .short but Interesting talk on the book entitled, "In Old Virginia." The only other paper was read by Mrs. D. C Atkinson and her subject was "The History of the Life of Thomas Nelson Page." The papers and talks were brief but very entertaining and at the close o,f their program a general discussion followed . In whioh several of the members took an active Interest. Many very interesting points were brought out -which made the meeting one of the very attractive ones of the

winter. Arrangements were made to

have the next regular meeting on Tuesday, March, 8, at the residence of Mrs.

A ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARTY. One of the very enjoyable society

events of the week accurred yesterday afternoon when Mrs. Marion Hower and Mrs. D. E. Boone entertained the members of the Erthstane club at the home of Mrs. Hower In Carroll street. The

guests were Invited to a St. Patrick's

day party and the parlors were pret

tily decorated In green. During the

afternoon the guests "embroidered and one of the pleasant features was a con

test for which the . hostess awarded

prizes. A sentence was passed among the guests and they -were requested to

form as many complete sentences as

they could from the one prepared by the hostesses. The honors were awarded

to Mrs. Robert Twiss who had seventeen sentences. At four o'clock the

guests were invited Into the dining room and served with a daintily arranged course luncheon. The same color scheme was chosen for the table and was carried out very attractively. Dur-

Philathea Embroidery club which was announced to take place last evening at the home of Mrs. John Muller in

West Sibley street had to be postponed on account of Illness. The next regular meeting wll take place Tuesday even

entetralned the members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the B. of R. T. and the eligible members yesterday afternoon at her home, 238 Fayette street. The entertainment was In the nature of a 5-o'clock tea and during the afternoon the guests met informally In the parlors and spent an enjoyable time with music. With the merger of the Southern Michigan railway into the system of the Chicago, South Bend and Northern Indiana, which is scheduled to take place March 7. the Murdocks, owners of tUe latter line, will start to enact a plan which had its inception several years ago a through electric service from Chicago to Indianapolis and from St. 'Joseph, Mich., to Indianapolis, both via South Bend, "Warsaw and Peru. The Murdocks will begin their limited service within a few months.
