NEWS OF THE COUNTY SEAT J
Crown Point Lost It. Possibly through the' fact that Crown Point citizens failed to make any concerted action to land the republican county convention, to be held next April 9, the county seat loses an event that has be n TTs own for the asking for
years. Indiana Harbor, by making" a strong; plea for the next convention and by the most vigorous and concerted boosting of the Harbor citizens, the next contender for the plum, Gary, was also beaten in the running. '. Crown Point's representation at the Harbor meeting was smaller than any town In the county, even democratic St- John sending a larger delegation to the committeemen meeting than the county seat A canvas was made of the committeemen assembled at the meeting previous to the calling of the convention and it. was made evident that Crown Point's chances of landing the convention were nil, the . poor transportation facilities provided by the Erie were given as the only excuse by any of the committeemen assembled for wishing a. change of location for the county convention. The Harbor representation went ..Into the meeting with nearly thirty-six votes for the landing of the county convention, and with Gary holding the balance of the votes the uselessness of even nominating Crown Point for the honor was evident. Thb Times last week made a plea for Crown Point citizens to make some concerted action to Induce s the Brie to give better transportation facilities, especially In the afternoon, and pointed out the loss of business, past and future, that results from this cause, and at the same time prophesied that other events of greater importance would be lost to the county seat If the situation was not relieved. The loss of the convention, though not of
great Importance, shows the trend 61 feeling and bears out the Tecent prophecy. Certainly this should be food for
serious thought among Crown Point
business man, and that some drastla action should be taken Is only too evident. Crown Point cannot afford tt
lose even a convention for the lack of railroad facilities, and to lose these
public meetings and business-bringing events, one by one, is only paving the way for other things of greater importance to be lost to the county seat. Get busy, citizens.
Whiting Is Beaten. The Crown Point high school basketball five was victorious over Whiting high players In the contest last Saturday evening at Central Music Hall by the score.of 86 to 28. It was a wellplayed and Interesting contest that was witnessed by the spectators assembled, and both teams put up the best article of basket-ball seen here for some time. Will Glover probably played the most spectacular game of the evening, but his playing Was followed so closely . by the star work of other players that it would be hard to pick any favorites. The Whiting aggregation also put up a good article of basket-ball, and as the score shows, were close contenders for the honors.
Frank Knight, Deputy Surveyor Murphy and Michael Grimmer were among the Crown Pointers attending the committeemen's meeting at Indiana Harbor Saturday. '
Gary Is well represented at the courthouse today and quite a few visitors are taking advantage of the fact that Crown Point is not only "wet" under foot, but all the way from three feet to 3 feet six inches high. Ralph Young.' attending the Chicago university, spent the week-end with' his
