New York, Feb. 18. The current year wiil probably show an increase

of close to 3,000,000 tons in the ingot

capacity of the steel mills of the

country. More plants for the manufacture of steel and iron are now under construction, or planned, than

ever before. '

The increase in the country's steel and iron production over the last ten

years. has been marvelous. In 1902,

for example, the capacty of the country's furnaces was not much over 19,000,000 tons ,as compared with about

32,000,000 tons at the present time.

It is safe to say that within the next two or three years the pig iron capacity of the country will have been

doubled since Jan. 1, 1902. FURNACES BEING BUILT. The following figures, giving the im

portant blast furnaces as well as the steel works construction now . in the hands of contracting engineers and builders, or definitely announced to be

undertaken in 1910, are compiled by

The Iron Age. They show that nine

teen blast furnaces are now building or planned, these being as follows, with . Capacity Company gross tons. Indiana Steel. Co. (2). . ..- ,300,000

Elaborate Athletic Field to

Be Built by Land Com

pany and Grand Stands

Will Seat About Three

Thousand People.

The Gary Land company will erect as soon as the weather will permit In

the spring an elaborate baseball and

athletlp field for the amusement of the people of Gary along those lines. The

park will be located east of Broadway, on "Virginia street, and Just north

of the C, I. & S. and Lake Shore ele vations.

No efforts will be spared to make the

grand stand and field the best that human efforts can make it. The entire field, whose length is 442x400 feet, will

be covered by eight inches of a mixture of clay and black dirt, so that the field will be permanently level. Upon this

grass will be grown as soon as possi

ble so that the field will be all that could be required for any kind of

athletic sports.

The grand .stands, which are to be

erected on the northwest corner of the field, will have a seating capacity of 2,800 and the bleachers will accommodate 1,500 more. The stands will be

covered and of permanent and abso

Tutely safe construction. It Is 'believed

that there will also, be a number of boxes put into the grand stands above

the fifteen tiers of seats.

The main entrance of the park will

be located at the northwest corner of the field. At the southeast corner there

will be provided entrances for auto

mobiles and carriages, where they will be enabeld to view the games from

their seats in the various equipages.

In addition to the seating capacity of

4,300 there will be accommodations about the field for at least as many

more.

It is planned to use this park not for

baseball purposes, which will be open

ed early in the spring, but the grounds will be turned over to football and other sports of a similar character that are in season. In short, it. is the purpose of the land company to provide

good clean amusement for the public

next year and erect a modern plant, where athletic sports may be enjoyed

and developed. It is another of the

public-spirited enterprises being under

taken by the land company in the in

terests of the people of Gary, which

will receive the hearty commendation

of all of its citizens.

(Special to Thh Times.) East Chicago, Ind., Feb. 18. Uywo-

laf Johns, Howard Clark and Lester

Ottenhelmer have been chosen to represent the East Chicago high school In

a Joint debate between the local high school and the Crown Point, high school

at Crown Point next Friday.

The topic is "Woman's Suffrage," and

East Chicago has the negative side of

the question. The team was chosen Wednesday night, when the various competitors for the, honor presented their views, the contest taking place at

the .high school building, with Pro

fessor Amidon and Miss Van Kleek acting as Judges. The negative side of

the question was divided and repre-, sented as follows: "Women Have no Right to Suffrage," Lester Ottenhelmer and Ralph Canine; "It Would Be Inexpedient for State and Society," VHow-

ard Clark and David Rosenthal; "It is

Not Necessary," 'Llywolaf Johns and Claude Dreesen.

The best four were picked out of the

six, Ralph Canine's name being one of the suartet, but it was decided to have Lester Ottenheimer represent the school at Crown Point instead of young Ca

nine.

The debaters all showed a good de

gree of logic and forcefulness In their

arguments, -and -thir- papers were highly creditable to their school. -,

STANLEY IS BROUGHT

BACK BY POLICE

(Special to The Times.)

Indiana Harbor, Ind., Feb. IS. Chief

of Police Albert Lewis yesterday went

to Muncle, Ind., to bring back Stanley

Jensowskl, who was wanted for wife

abandonment.

Stanley, according to the police, cred

Its his family troubles to a double case

of mother-in-law, augmented by other family connections, declaring that he

and his wife get along amicably enough until the parents of each get into the game and begin to stir things up. First It was the one set of parents andthe n the other who took a hand, and things in consequence became so warm that Stanley decided to jump the game. He accordingly left Indiana Harbor, where he was employed at the Inland mill, and went to Muncle. Here he secured work arid his wife, hearing of his whereabouts, caused his arrest. The couple have two children, one three and the other a year and a half old. Jensowskl has acreed to move his

family to Muncle, where they will be free from the irritating Influences which have broken up their home, and all is serene for the present at least.
