An Instance of his stalwartness was hown when Mayor Knotts requested Attorney Matthews and Attorney Bruce to come over to Gary for a conference with him. Attorney Matthews accepted the Invitation and has ben the most harmless representative of . the AjitiSaloon league that the people of this locality ever saw, since that time. Attorney Bruce, however, sent a message something like this to Mayor Knotts: "If I attended the conference vrhlch you are attempting to arrange, .1 fear -that 1 should be prompted to tell you some things that you would not like to hear." Bruce did not attend. The gTand Jury adjourned yesterday, after having returned forty-three indictments.
