III CO. 10 II1E LAKE GO

' The Chicago Title & Trust company, which In recent years has practically monopolized the guarantee of title business, is now looking for a location in Gary to establish a branch office In this city. It is said that they have gone so far as to settle on a location, but the deal has not ben closed up as yet.

It is said that it is the aim of the big Chicago concern, to corner the Immense volue of business done in Lake county, in the future. They have already secured a large portion of Gary's guarantee of title business, nearly all of the business of the real estate deal

ers with offlces in Chicago going to thia firm. It has ben intimated for some time that this big concern had intentions to go after the Lake county business, but they had given out no definite information. Their coming to Gary, however, will men muca h to this city, for the real estate dealers will then have little trouble in having their land titles guaranteed by one of the strongest corporations of its kind in the country. The purpose of the company's locating -here at the present time. It is understood, is to prepare for the -spring rush of business which is expected. Their only , competitors in Lake county will be the well-known firms of Aftman & Dinwiddle and the Lake Counts Title & Trust company. They will locate in the old Calumet Savings & Trust quarters.

John J. Nyhoff, manager of the Dalton Coal company today denied that his firm was facing a coal famine, but declared that they had enough fuel on hand to last them for two weeks, if there was no other coal shipped in in the interim. In addition to that fact he stated that over two hundred car loads of coal had been ordered from the mines and that seventy-eight of these cars were in transit and expected to arrive in Gary at almost any time. In spite of the bad weather in the past few days the mines announce that the order of the Dalton Coal company would be filled. Beside the 149 car-loads of coil which this firm recently ordered they state that they have ordered fifty more to be delivered to Gary at once. The two leading coal companies of the city, the Dalton and the Gary Coal company, assert that the demand for coal this year is far in excess of what the firms had reason to expect in consideration of the mild winters in thia region in years past. Both of these firms have found it necessary to employ a number of extra teams and men for the past few days in order to meet the demand for coal. Mr. Nyhoff stated today that he had fifteen extra teams employed at the present time in Gary. When the cold weather started the coal company hf d 2,600 tons of coal stored at their yards, ready for delivery, but this has now been practically used up.

It is thought that the message to the; Gary man was from Governor Mar- j shall anent to the Jefferson day ban-! quet. According to some programs in !

Gary, the governor is to be a guest of honor at the St. Andrew's society banquet and also at the democratic love feast. In some democratic quarters it

would be preferred If the governor '

would not visit Gary and reports to effect that the governor would not be in Gary for either occassion, have been given out. It Is thought tht his message to W. C. Crolious yesterday may have been to the effect that he would be unable to be in Gary for the Jefferson club banquet' and that Corlious hurried to Indianapolis to urge the governor to be present.

A telegram which reached "W. C. Cro. llous yesterday took him to Indianapolis yesterday on a mysterious mission.

A seventeen thousand dollar real estate deal was closed in Gary yesterday, when the South Broadway Land company, with T. W. Englehart as its president, purchased the Mathew McBride building for $17,000. The property was bought for speculation, and Mr. McBrlde, who Is a saloonist, will in all probability retire. The property is located on Broadway, just north of the Michigan Central tracks on the east side of the street. The building is a two-story brick and has a thirty-foot front. It is one of the big deals that has-been closed in Gary within the past few weeks, and will undoubtedly bring a handsome profit for the purchasers.

MASONS WILL INSTALL

1 (Special to The Times.) East Chicago, Ind., Dec. 30. The Masons are going to hold an installation on New Tear's night; which will be attended by a somewhat unusual feature, that of a musical program. The ceremonies will open with music in charge of James O. Parks, who will contribute a number, and E. D. Hoose will also be a participant, together with a number of others, all members of the order. The Ladies of the Eastern Star will serve an elaborate luncheon and altogether the event will be made a most enjoyable one, members ' only being

present. The officers to be installed

intrinsic value pf an industry to a community. It is money which is the direct factor in the building of homes, in the purchase of Its furnishings, and provisions for the family. Upon the circulation of adequate money earned by the employes depends the success of those who are dependent upon them for their own sustenance. It will be seen, therefore, that the payment of $4,405,000 has meant much to, the three-year-old city of Gary. This figure, it would be well to state, does not include the pay-roll of such corporations as the Chicago Telephone company, the Gary & Interurban, the city administration, the South Shore route,' or the employes of the merchants, supply firms and railroad lines independent of the steel corporation. A GREAT INCREASE. Of no less Interest to the people of Gary has been the phenomenal increase In the pay-roll of the wage earners of the Indiana Steel company, independent of the salaried employes. For the past, year the average increase per month has been $26,000. This, of course, is due largely to the fact that men employed by independent contractors in the construction of the mills were turned over to the steel corpora

tion in the operation of departments of the plant as they were completed. The exact amount of the salaries of the wage earners during each month of the past year is as follows: , January 813.531.S7 February 180,810.S March 201,743.10 April 213,112.76 May 205,903.00 June 225,488.36 July 225,306.04 Angunt 291,837.88 September 326,326.50 October 34S,497.02 November 3S5.857.9S December 337,763.25

in many cases there has been deducted from their pay a considerable amount for the payment of house rents for buildings owned by the corporation and also a large sum for share of stock in the United States Steel corporation, which the employes are permitted to purchase. Adding to this total this sums, together with that of the salaried employes, would bring the total for the year -to approximately $3, 500.000. The- million dollars paid to the employes by other corporations located In Gary during the past year, many of which are contracting firms working in the steel mills, is estimated by the officials as follows: G. I- D. & D. Co.. .$120,000 Rltrr-Connclly Co.. 120,000 Stein. fc Lamb..... 80,000 I. I. & B. Co 75.000 E., J. & E. R. R. .. 400,000 Aetna Powder Co. . . 100,000 Total $005,000 .'NO LESS P KM ARK ABLE. Hardly less remarkable has-been the growth In the pay-roll of the E., J. & E. railroad, which we are able to submit to the public, with the exception of salaries paid to heads of departments. The amounts paid each month

are: January $ 20,000 February 10.00O March . . . 10,000 April 20,000 " May 25.0O0 Jane 25,000 Jnly 25.000 Au grant 25,000 September 35,000 October 45,000 November . 40,000 December 40,000 Total $320,000 "With this fine record to look upon during the past year, Gary can turn to the year 1910 as it Is ushered in tomorrow night with even greater pleasure. A year hence when the story of the. growth in pay-roll is told to the public by The Times it will be still mora remarkable. It will then include tha vast sums diverted into this rich county by the American. Bridge company, which will have made material progress with the construction of their plant 'that has already been started; the American Sheet & Tin Plate mills, the Pittsburg Bolt & Screw works, the American Locomotive works, the coks ovens and possibly other concern which may decide to build in this city in the interim.
