fries for at least twelve rounds in the
battle for the championship o? the
world July 4 the colored champion has
made known to his friends. He aso believes that after he has led the retired title holder for a dozen merry rounds he will beable to finish the big boilermaker, but even if he shouldn't be able to turn the trick he will string his money that he will last at least twelve rounds. The black made this known to a number of friends while taking in the six-day, race at Madison Square
Garden, and as a consequence the odds
on this proposition are likely to be
pretty slim on the day of the battle.

it. Don't you thing that I can keep out of his way that long, even if I don't knock him out myself? The way I. figure it is that after the twelve rounds or so are over Jeffries will be so tired tfiat I can go in and finish him at will. I will bet quite a chunk that is the way it will come out. "Don't risk any money that he will get an, early knockout, for there isn't a chance in the world. I know what Jeffries expects to do. He intends to
rush and bore in from the tap of the gong, bearing me down by sheer weight. Well, he'll get tired of that, all right. He can rush as much as he pleases, but it will be shadow boxing for him, and, besides. I expect to get in a jab or two when he isn't looking. The fact that the colored champion was so free with his plan makes the fight followers a little suspicious, and it seems to bear out the reiterated statement that on account of the pic-

you can just bet that the fight will last that long, but not because it has been

"I know what I am going up against,
and I am not foolish enough to think
that I can go in and knock out Jeffries in the first round or two. I am
equally positive that he can't turn the
trick on me. and that is why I say
that the fight won't be over inside of
twelve rounds. No man living can get to me in that number of rpunds, and I e.m not making any secret of the fact
that I don't believe that Jeffries can put me away in that time.
"Now, here is the proposition. Jeffries thinks he can get me in a corner
and knock my block off right after the the plunges will probably be made that

is that he will have a fine time doing I to fifteen rounds
son may be sincere in his statement about his plans, but it sounded as if it had been rehearsed for the occasion simply as a means of putting the soft pedal on the plans agreed to between the interested parties. Whether he is sincere or not in his announced plans for the clash, others figure that, even U it should not be fixed up in advance, the scheme looks feasible. Very few believe ' that Jeffries will be able to get to the slippery Ethiopian early in the fight, and the twelve rounds look reasonable enough.
The chances are that the biggest part of the money bet on the fight will be risked on the number of rounds, and

Fred Clarke, the unsigned manafger of the world's champion Pirates, is In Chicago. He arrived there last night from Springfield, Kan., and will leave this afternoon on the Twentieth Cen
tury Limited for New York, where he will confer with Barney Dreyfuss,
owner of The Pirates. Although Clarke
has not attached his name to contract for 1910, he fines not anticipate any trouble with his boss. The manager of the champions brings the. valuable ' information that Honus Wagner, star of stars, has not signed, either. Clarke did not say positively whether the big German would pen his name to the "poipers' 'or not, but left the impression that he would. In
answer to the question of the spring
training quarters of the champions
Clarke said: "I don't know just where they will go, but I think it's a pipe that California will not be the favored spot. Furthermore, let me say that I do not
take any stock in the report that Tom my Leach will manage the Phillies."
What is most interesting Clarke right
now is his canvass covering for a dia
mond in case of rain. Clarke is the big inventor and intends to get all the ma
jor league owners to purchase one of the coverings at ,the league meeting
in New York next week. '
"Three clubs posses the coverings
now," said Clarke. "They are Pitts
Durg, Cleveland and Cincinnati, l am
communicating -with several universi
ties, as the coverings would be hot stuff for football fields. It is a per
fect protection against rain. It is 160
feet square, and is made of parafine
duck canvass. The total weight is 10,-
000 pounds. . '
"It can be rolled up in no time ,and it takes only five minutes to spread
it out. It covers the entire skinned
diamond and the base lines."

GARY AFTER BIG BOUT

New York, Dec. 10. The close of the fifth day of the six-day bicycle grind found the ffcur leading teams riding
around principally to rirevent second division members from gaining the necessary lap and Emll Georget making ; frantic efforts to get up with the lead-
era. There is no chance of the records be

lhe Georget team ' lost a lap In a general scramble. Anderson and Vanoni made another attempt at ltt:0S and
regained the lost lap by the cleverest
strategy displayed so far. Anderson
.started the sprint. He sneaked away
and opened up such a gap that his riv
als were dazed. Instead of following him the field, under the leadership of
Jack Clark, kept moving around slowly
and before they had gone five laps
Anderson and Vanoni were in the bunch.
It was done simply and cleverly and so
quickly that the crowd could hardly
understand it. Fred W. West, the unluckiest man In the race, and Joe' Fugle r, took a fall at 9:30, but no one was injured. West has met with more trouble than all the bunch. JEFF GETS THREE VOTES FOR MAYOR
OF LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles, Dec. 11. James J. Jeffries had a narrow escape at the polls
here Tuesday. His name reaped three
votes for mayor, almost a stampede in
fact. His candidacy was not announced before the election, but this did not
prevent the cunning of his supporters,
They gathered at the polls early, and
refused to be intimidated by the vari ous ward heelers. It was noticed that all three enter
ed the booths casually, as if nothing but of the ordinary was on foot, and
there in the strict privacy they em bossed the name of J. J. J. on the pa
per furnished for the purpose. All three are preserving their pencils as
mementos of the occasion and all three
have signified their Intentions of noti
fying Jeff of their deed.
Friends of the trio of voters are
spreading reports that the voters are merely angling for free tickets to the Jeffries-Johnson battle, but the men in
question laugh at the rumors. "Xoth
ing to it," exclaimed one when inter
viewed by a local reporter yesterday. "Made out of whole cloth," said another, while the third maintained a dignified silence. The fact that Jeff got the three votes was brought out yesterday in the official canvass.

i Great preparations are being . made by the Polish people of Hammond and the surrounding cities for the reception of Zbyszko, the Polish wrestler who will appear in this city next Tuesday evening. It is unedrstood that plans are under'way to meet the wrestler at the station with a band and escort him to the hotel. Arrangements have already been made for a banquet which is to be given at the residence of Father John Kasprzykowski on Cameron street. The banquet will be attended by twelve Hammonditea outside of the friends of the Polish priest. Among those who have been invited aTe Charles S. Stewart, Ora C. Hubbard. Melvin Monnett, Otto Klemperer, Leon A. Berezniak, John E. McGarry, Roscoe E. Woods, C. C. Stevens, Dr. John G. Message, Dr John Krone and Dr. H. Groman. .The seat sale" for the wrestling match has been very good and it Is expected that the whole house will be sold out before the evening of the entertainment. It is said that never before has there been such a splendid aggregation of world renown wrestlers in this part of the country. The bill will bo one that the wrestling enthusiast can not afford to pass up. It will be remembered that in a handicap match between Champion Frank Gotch and Zbyszko, Gotch was unable to throw Zzyszko In an hour. Zbyszko now makes the boast that he will be able to throw Gotch after he gets Into training. The wrestling carniavl is to be given under the auspices of the Hammond Athletic association and great interest is being aroused in the event both in the cities of the Calumet region and in Chicago. The bill includes a match betweeh Zbyszko and Raoul De Roulinger, tle French champion, a semi-wlndup between Young Jordon, the world's champion in the lightweight class, and Peter Is'chols, known as "Rough House Nick." J The famous Greek wrestler, Demetral, will wrestle with Mike Conley, and Tom Winklehofer, the Austrian Hercules, will wrestle George Siegfried, the German thunderbolt.

Gary was ready with a certified check for $75,000 to be bid for the JeffriesJohnson fight for the heavyweight championship of the world, and in which it was further published that a committee of Gary and other Lake county business men would shortly wait on the governor in an effort to obtain his permission for the fight to be pulled off on Indiana soil, it being added that the business men thought they could present the matter to the governor "in such a way as to obtain his consent." The governor declined to make any comment on the question at this time, as it had not reached him regularly. It is thought, however, that in the
