Saturday, Dec. 4, 1909. -7 THE TIMES. HEW STREET L16HT1I1G SYSTEMSQ011T0START Gary's Great White Way Expected to Be on Next Week. EAST CHICAGO GO. HAS HEW SECRETARY MOMY for the HOUDA ( 60Harbor to Be Seat of Government for Beverly of New York.
It is probable that the lights will be
turned on for Gary's new street lighting; system not later than Friday night
and Gary wilt enjoy the novelty of her great whit way. It was expected that
the system would be completed by Dec.
1, but delay In receiving material and
the fact that certain castings had to be changed made it necessary to postpone the turning on of the switch for ten daya. The first wrought iron role equipped complete was finished yesterday afternoon In front of the Gary State bank. All poles will be painted with Illumlnum and with the pretty clusters of lights it will give Broadway a beautifu appearance, not only in the evening while the l:ght3 are burning, but in the day time as well. The lighting system is a work of art and has a substantial, permanent appearance. It! ig expected therefore, next week that not later than Saturday, and pos
sibly Thursday, 272 clusters of ' lights on eighty beautiful wrought iron poles will dazzle from Fifth to Eighth avenues. It will b-i worth a trip to Gary for the outsiders to see its new lighting system. The work of installing the conduits for the wires, erecting the poles, tear- - lng up the sidewalks, concreting them over again, putting on the fixtures and connecting vip the wires has been a big Job and has cost the property owners considerable money, but when they see the system that is installed they will feel well repaid for their trouble.

(Special to Thb Times.) Indiana Harbor, Ind.f Dec. 4. The East Chicago company has once more got a secretary located in Indiana Harbor. Mr. Beverly Chew of New York, a brother-in-law of President Robert E. Todd, is the gentleman selected for the position and arrived here to take up his new duties last Thursday. Since C. A. 'Westberg's resignation of the office last spring, when he was elected to the vice presidency of the company, the position has been
filled by Messrs. Thomas F. Mooney and Robert T. Faulds of Chicago, wno held the title to comply with the laws governing corporations, but who as a matter of fact were secretaries In name only. Owing to the increase in the East Chicago company's business since the recent manufacturing boom struck Indiana Harbor and East Chicago, Mr. TVestberg has been overwhelmed with work, and it was found that the serv
ices of an active secretary were absolutely Indispensable, hence the appointment of Mr. Chew. The latter gentleman has expressed himself as being perfectly satisfied with his surroundings here, and was more than surprised on his arrival to find such a wideawake, up-to-date town for one of Its age.
POLO GAME TONIGHT (Special to The Times.) East Chicago, Ind., Dec. 4. The East Chicago polo team will open the season with a game with tiie Chutes Parks of Chicago, Thursday night, Dec. 9, at the Lewis rink. The local team
has reorganized this year and now feels equal to meeting any team in the state, with good chances of success, having been greatly strengthened by the two star players from Indiana Harbor. The latter are Mat Sternberg and Tom Lewis. Bill Carrol Is manager and
captain of the team.
