(Continued from Page On.) i ihown by a chemical analysis in which the water from all the famous sanitariums was compared. WATERS ARC FAMOUS. Of the real health giving minerals In water, those of the Knotts springs have been found to have the best proportion, although some of the other waters may be exceptionally strong In gome particular mineral. Another element which enters Into the consideration, is the fact that the sanitarium is located in the shadow of Chicago. One great drawback to sanitariums is the fact that some doctors, ns a rule, do not encourage their patients to go to sanitariums for the reason that the patients are beyond their reach, and as the sanitarium, too, is often boyond the financial reach of the patient. MTMPRtt OK UIU10.4DS. A number of railroads, together with the South Shore Interu'bsn line, traverse the Kftotts holdings. The land itself, in wKich the springs are found. Is ideally located, and the artist could Improve little upon nature there to make the springs and the sourrounding country more scenic.

Two kinds of telephone meters have been proposed for Chicagoans who use measured telephone service one by the Chicago Telephone company and another by the city council commission created by the telephone ordinance. This commission comprises Commissioner of Public Works Ilanberg, Corporation Counsel Brundage. and Aid. Snow. The meter submitted by the telephone company consists of a steel box about 5x5 inches In dimension, standing out from the wall about four inches. It ran be placed on a desk. At the top is a small window, back of

! which are four disk wheels indicating the number of calls furnished the subscriber.

In calling, the subscriber presses the button. This signals the exchange operator, who answers the call in the usual way. If the call is completed the operator presses a key which registers the call. If the. call lias not been completed because the desired line is busy or for any other reason, the operator presses another key which releases the mechanism but does not register a call. There are between 8,000 and 10. 000 measured service telephones in Chicago, but at present the users have no means of knowing how much service they are using, tiie only register being in the office of the telephone company. If either of the meters is accepted it will be ordered installed at once.

(Special to The Times.) Indiana Harbor, Ind., Dec. 1. Dave Mitchell, proprietor of the Harbor hotel, has been reported missing to the police of this city by Rose Mitchell, his wife. Mitchell disappeared mysteriously Monday afternoon, having gone out at 3 o'clock, ostensibly to "take a walk." He had something over $200 on his person at the time, according to Mrs. Mitchell, and whether he has met with foul play or has simply skipped with the $200, the police do not claim to know. Mrs. Mitchell is of the opinion, as she told Officer Weifenbach, that he changed his mind about the walk and boarded the 3:36 Lake Shore train for Chicago. The Mitchells some time ago bought out the Kaufman place in Michigan

avenue and conducted a saloon and j boarding house there until recentlj', when they took possession of the Har- I bor hotel, formerly run by Tom O'Con- I nell. They had a lease for the Kaufman place and so were obliged to move i within two days, it is said, in order! to start business in the Harbor hotel. On this occasion they engaged a large ; force of men and along in the middle ; of the night they began to take their 1 furniture out of the old place and cart it over to the new. It took them about an hour, according to report, to make the transfer, about forty men being engaged in the work. i The description of Mitchell, as furn- !

Ished by the police is to the effect that he is 27 years old, five feet eleven inches in height, weight 170 pounds, dark hair, dark eyes, smooth face. When last seen he wore a light derby hat, brown coat and trousers, black shoes, No. 8, and colored shirt.

The agents of the various express companies operating In Gary met last night in the offices of the American Express company and there formulated delivery limits In the city of Gary which will be used by all of the companies henceforth. The territory in which the express companies will deliver packages is that which is now being covered by the free delivery service. Outside of these limits, If a business man or householder desires to send a parcel or have one

brought to them, an extra charge will be made for the services. The purpose of this Is that outsida of this territory there are but few paved streets and they refuse to make the horses pull through the sand and take considerable time in doing so, for the delivery of the small amount of goods which people in the outlying districts might Bend. The establishment of boundary lines is customary in all cities, but has never been In vogue In Oarv before. The express companies, whose agents form the Express Agents' association, and which established the boundaries last night, are the American, WelisFargo, Pacific and Adams.

Teter Buchich. a laborer, employed in the yards of the Indiana Steel mills, was instantly killed last night when a big piece of rock fell upon him, crushing him to death. The unfortunate man was working near one of the blast furnaces when

a traveling crane, carrying a huge

piece of cinder, passed over him. As

j he started to get out of the way a ! piece of the rock fell from the main ! part, striking him on the head, and

lay stunned by the blow. Several of Buehieh's fellow employes ran to his assistance, and after extricating him the mass, medical aid was called, but life was nearly extinct at that time. Buehieh's head and body being horribly crushed. The ambulance was sent for and Buchich was taken to Jones' morgue, where the inquest will be held today by Coroner E. II. Gordon. According to information that has been received in Gary, the Edward D. Mandell tract of land, which occupies a strip three miles along the Calumet river, between Hammond and Gary, has been sold to Pittsburg interests for $1,800,000, or for approximately $1,500 an acre for the 1,200 acres. While this report cannot be confirmed

it is possible that it is true. There have been rumors from time to time

about the posslbilty of the sale of this

tract to the independent steel Inter ests.

AUTOMOBILE RUNS . my FROM OVER Machine in Gary Doesn't Wait to Be Cranked Before Starting.

(Special to The Times.) Indiana Harbor, Dec. 1. Gary is to

have a modern apartment building which will discount many of the most

molern fashionable structures in New

lork and Chicago, for the nerfection

jne name or mo rumored purcnaser is of its appointments, and the complete

ness of its conveniences. An Indiana

Harbor man Is responsible for the ln-

not known. The property in question is now under the agency of a Chicago real estate dealer, but it was recently held by a Gary real estate dealer. The fact that the Indiana Harbor canal is fast being completed to the Calumet river will make this an ideal location for a large steel mill. It Is also rumored that a tract of land containing 200 acres on the Calumet river, south of the Federal Furnace property, is under option to the Cleveland ore and furnace interests.

RONS INTO A BRICK PILE

Sees President Johnson of Indiana Sales Company Approach and Bolts.

President Johnson of the Indiana Sales company of Gary had the ex

perience yesierday cf contending with

a runaway autonubi, which is a

most unusual experience for a man owning a vehicle of this character. Before the machine was stopped botli the big front headlights were broken and other damage might have been done had not a hig brick pile intervened. The affair happened on Sixth avenue, near th alley between Washington street and Broadway. The car had

been left in front of a store while the ownrr was transacting business. Just as Mr. Johnson stepped outside and walked towards the machine to crank it, it bolted directly towards the alley and never stopped until it had struck a brick pile which will be used in the pavement of the alley. When the car struck the brick both the big lights were badly smashed and will have to be replacedThe scientific reason for the car starting off in that manner, is that it was neither animated or frightened, but the brake refused to hold and it started down the incline in the street. If the car had been at the top of a hill instead of the top of a gulley in the street the whole car might have been wrecked before it was stopped, judging by the way It started out. Mr. Johnson appreciated the joke, although it will cost him the price of two new headlights.

ADVERTIVE IX TUB TIKES,

novation, tiie enterprising Individual being J. R. Brant of Commonwealth avenue. The structure will cost $50,000 and wiil be located at the corner of Sixth avenue and Van Buren street. The material to be used in construction will be brick and stone and it will have a lawn on both Van Buren street and Sixth avenue, the same as many of the luxurious apartment buildings in the f ashioiiable neighborhoods on the south and upper north sides in Ch leago. The finish will be. hardwood throughout and it will be heated with steam. It will have janitor service, hot and cold water and a laundry room for the use of the tenants, equipped with clothes driers.
