0 ATHLETIC CLUB

HAS 10 GAMES SLATED

The Hammond Athletic club has two Important games on its nchedule for the coming week's end. The free indoor baseball same between the local team and the crack team representing the Armour Grain company in the Board of Trade League will be one of the attractions. The football game with the Hyde Park, Athletic club will be the other. The indoor baseball team has been developed until it is now as good as any team fn the country. No admission will be. charged Friday with the exception that a large crowd will be attracted to the game and the general public will become interested in this new sport. Indoor baseball is said to be a very interesting game and the people of this city will have the opportunity to see one of the best contests of the season free of charge. The gymnasium of the. local athletic association is well equipped with seats for the spectators and the comfort of the guests of the club will be looked to by the members. Rig Foohball Gnme. The next big football game is next Sunday when the local team will meet the Hyde Park Athletic club. This game promises to be one of the best of the season. While it is true that the Hyde Park Athletic club was able to defeat East Chicago by a score of only 3 to 0 last Sunday, this is no criterion for the reason that the field was so muddy that the heavier players on the Hyde Park team could not make any headway and the lighter men on the East Chicago team.

The best Indication of the strength of the visitors who are coming to Hammond next Sunday is the fact that the Anson's Colts were able to defeat the Hyde Park Athletic club by a score of only 12 to 0 and the Hyde Park team was able to hold the Eckersalls down to a 0 to 0 score. It might be observed that the Eckersalls and Anson's Colts are rated as two of the best professional teams in Chicago and consequently the showing of the Hyde Park team against them is creditable. Other Game Scheduled. If Hammond is able to take Hyde Park's measures next Sunday it will place the team representing this city near the top of the football ladder. It was learned late last evening that a game has been scheduled with the First Regiment team for Nov. 28. the Sunday after Thanksgiving and a game will be scheduled with either the Eckersalls or Anson's Colts for Sunday, Nor. 21. This will probably complete the schedule of the Hammond Athletic association's football team for the present season unless there are some games scheduled in the future that are not being planned now. The sport loving public of Hammond has a great deal to look forward to as every one of the three remaining games are with the best teams in Chicago, and it is to the credit of the Hammond Athletic association that there has not been a second rate game on its schedule this season.

white undefeated champion at 3 to 1. Coffroth Jumped at the chance and offered to cover any 'reasonable amount at such a figure. "Not that I have formed my opinion about the match," he explained, "but I am sure the quotation is out of line. I could lay the bets at a price that would net me a nice sum without risk. "I am going on the presumption that the championship will be fought Just outside of San Francisco. It is the only logical place for the men to box. Jeffries and Johnson know where the only safe spot is. I am satisfied that some San Francisco club will get the battle when the bids are opened." Ogden, Utah, came to the bat with an offer of ?80,000 for the big match today, Jimmy Brown of the Mormon city being sponsor for the huge cash offer. In his excitement Brown neglected to prepay the message and it cost Jeffries J3.80 to get the missive. San Francisco, Nov. 11. Commissioner Tom Corbett, the man behind the pile, has set the odds on the JeffriesJohnson fight at even money. Corbett is the first man to receive money on the prospective, mill of the heavyweights. Ten thousand dollars rests in the coffers of Corbett's betting emporium to be quoted at even money that Jeffries wins. Although the battle is still a matter of the future and hinges on the chances of either Johnson or Jeffries backing out at the eleventh hour, the J10.000 will remain as a bet until the big fellows of the ring have fought or burled the hatchet once and for all time. Corbett showed a lively interest in the offer of William A. Brady to make Jeffries a present of $10,000 if he would meet Kaufman in a ten round bout, and a $10,000 side bet that Kaufman would win. "I will bet $20,000 today and $20,000 more In one week that Jeffries wins if they meet. I have been waiting twenty years for something soft like this," said Corbett.

New York, Nov. 11. "Jeffries and Johnson will go into the ring with even money and take your pick posted about their chances,' said Jim Coffroth, the San Francisco fight promoter. "Either man may be post favorite by a shade. Just which one will be selected on the long end is a matter that late training will decide, but even money will rule during the greater portion of the betting."

Coffroth is admittedly the best judge

of prices on boxing matches in the country. The late Harry Corbett, who ran a room where fortunes were won and lost, always consulted the clever handler of the greatest boxing events in recent years before he opened the betting on any big event. Sometimes the two men differed as to the price. Coffroth was seldom wrong. The discussion came up in an uptown hotel frequented by sporting men.

recrnit manager will discuss the makeup of the team for next year. Comiskey has several ideas on the subject, but he wants to hear what Duffy has to say on the proposition. Although not definitely announced, it is believed by baseball enthusiasts that Hahn, Tannehill and Altizer will be among the missing ones next year. Many of the .recruits will be scratched before the team reaches here on the return from the spring trip. Among those expected ta figure in deals are Pitchers Fiene and Patterson. Comiskey expects to see one of the best recruits today when John Beall passes through the city on his way to Washington. Beall cut a wide swath in the Paclflr coast's batting figures the past season and is regarded highly by the Sox boss.

Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 11. Old Father Time was annihilated, smashed to bits and blown to the four winds again yesterday afternoon when Lewis Strang, driving his 200 horse power Fiat "Baby" captured the four and ten mile events on the second card at the two mile motor speedway. Two heart-breaking finishes and Billy Knipper's triumphant drive winning the 100 mile light car event with a Chalmers-Detroit rounded out the real thrillers on the lightning fast circuit. One of the most Spectacular finishes ever staged on a race course brought the crowd to its feet when Hugh Harding piloted his Apperson "Jack Rabbit" to victory in the ten mile event. The Buick handled by William Oldknow won the amateur ten mile free-for-all by l-100th of a second, but with Joe Nelson at the wheel the little blue streak lost the feature event, 100 miles, on the last lap. The exhaustion of the lubricating oil supply blasted Nelson's chances for first place. Strang was compelled to withdraw from the ten mile race for large stock cars after the first lap. In which his Fiat had assumed the lead. He captured two other races with ease. The Fiat demon defeated Oldfield and

Christie in a specially arranged ten

mile race In the remarkable time of 7:01:04. averaging about 0:39:6 to the : mile, except in the last lap, -when he j "blew' 'a tire and had to reduce speed at the turns. This alone prevented him from negotiating this distance In less than seven minutes. As It was his'

time broke Aitken's new record made Tuesday of 8.02.41. In the four mile event Strang averaged 0:41:11. George Robertsson was compelled to withdraw from both events In which he was entered. The feature of the day, the 100 mile light stock car race, ended in first and second places going tl the ChalmersDetroit drivers, Knipper and Matson, respectively. At the start Nelson, In a Buick, fought Matson for second place, eventually winning it when the latter stopped for repairs. A thirty mile chase of Knipper put him in first position, where he held until the eightieth mile, when Knipper, who took brilliant adcantages of the curves, swooped past him at the stands, bringing the crowd to its feet with a great roar of applause.

fellows if they will meet on his ranch near Virginia City, Nev. He stipulates the bout must be to a fviisb. Nelson offers to post $30,000 at once to bind the deal, a sum larger than either Johnson or Jeffries have demanded. Just where Bat intends to draw his spectators from is not known, but he is confident he can make money out of the deal.

WELSH SEEKS GO WITH NELSON British Champ Anxious for Match With Bat. New York. Nov. 11. Freddie Welsh, who a few- days ago was awarded a. diamond belt by the National Sporting club of London, on becoming-the undisputed lightweight champion of England, will start for this country soon with the purpose of forcing Battling Nelson in a fight for the championship. According to advices from London, Welsh has challenged Nelson repeatedly without receiving recognition, and has posted $3,000 as a forfeit on several occasions. He now declares that if Nelson does not fight him he will claim the championship.

Cincinnati, O., Nov. 11. President Garry Herrmann doesn't want to let Pitcher Bob Spade go to Chicago. There is not much love lost between Oarry and Murphy, and if the local president can find another berth for his husky, disgruntled twirler next year, he will go to that other berth. Herrmann talked here tonight about Spade and said he understood that both St. Louis and Boston want him.

Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 11. Michigan's football team ended its preparation for the Pennsylvania game yesterday, and last night the squad left for the stronghold of the Quakers. The final workout consisted chiefly of a rehearsal of the new plays that will be used against Pennsylvania with the regular lineup in action for the first time since the Notre Dame defeat last Saturday. Captain Allerdice ran through signals at right half, and the trainer announced before leaving In all probability the captain will be able to occupy his regular position in the lineup against Pennsylvania. There still Is some doubt about three of the positions. Conklin and Edmunds may be shifted at the last minute. Conklin may start the game at left end, with Edmunds at right guard. For fullback George Lawton has been crowding Clark.
