The new church edifice is situated at the corner of Eighth avenue and Connecticut street and is the only church on tlie east side of Broadway. The new

church building:, costing: over $5,000

John Urbane, living at Twenty-third

and Michigan avenue, Gary, was almost

suffocated with his family last night at

3:30 when his house caught fire, and only for the yelping of the family dog the occupants might never have been

able to escape. The house and all of

the furniture was totally destroyed, but

was insured.

Neighbors living in the vicinity of the Urbane home claim that a man had

been prowling about the neighborhood, and the manner in which the blaze started led them to believe that It may have been yet on fire by the mysterious stranger. The fire started in one corner of the house, in which there was no fire or lamp lighted at the time. The persistent barking of the dog awoke Mrs. Urbane out of the semiconscious state into which the family had lapsed, due to the dense smoke, which gradually overpowered them. Throwing open the window she screamed for help and began the arduous task of waking her husband and two children. Mr. Urbane grabbed the two young children just as the flames had practically surrounded the house and

threw them, bundled in a feather mattrees, onto the ground. He then rushed back Into the house to save part of the furniture, but the smoke drove him out and he hard a hard time to save himself. One of the neighbors, Harvey Saults, ran several blocks distant to the interurban power station, where he turned in the fire alarm. By the time that the department arrtved, however, the house was nearly destroyed and the bucket brigades of the neighbors availed nothing. Mr. Urbane is an employe of the Indiana Steel company.

The Best. An almost forgotten poet, Robert Hlnckly Messinger, quaintly wishes for old wood to burn, old books to read and old friends to talk with In an Ideal old age, and he might also have added, old tunes to be played in the long twilights while he dozed and dreamed in his easy chair.

The xSolden Mean. A certain En-glish mayor, whose period of office had come to an end, was surveying the work of the year. "I have endeavored," he said with an air of conscious rectitude, "to administer Justice without swerving to partiality, on the one hand, or impartiality, oa the other."
