The Mongolian race is said to be immune from color blindness. In each 1.000 marriages in Great Britain, twenty-one are between first cousins. In eacli 223 lunar months there are twenty-nine eclipses of the moon and forty-one of the sun. Lightning is estimated to cost from 700 to 800 human lives in the world every year. Soaking silver tableware in s.our milk over night will restore the brilliance of the motal. London was the first city to light its streets by gas. the first lamps being installed in 1811. Deposits of bituminous coal, estimated to be worth $500,000 have been discovered in the canal zone. A patent has been granted by France upon a process for case-hardening metals with carbon monoxide gas. American apparatus will be used almost exclusively in the reconstruction of Pekin's telephone system. Women are now allowed admission to full matriculation in all German

universities except that at Rothrock.

The United States imports about

125 000 tons of manufactured chalk ev

BLUE BEAVER HAT WITH WHITE PLUMES. A year ago the combination of beaver and handsome ostrich plumes would have seemed very Inconsistent. Now it Is extremely chic. Beaver Is the felt of the year and some of the new ones are lovely tn coloring and stunning in hape. A cavalier model in a rather bright navy blue shade is shown, the uperb snow-white ostrich tips forming the main trimming, though there ts a big' blue velvet bow matching the beaver tucked carelessly among the feathers on the right side of the crown. :

FADS AND FASHIONS

New York, Oct. 15. The fashionable hops are displaying a new crop of Imported models which confirm the previous statement that no particular style haa won the exclusive right of way in this season's fashion. Side by sido with Mayen Age styles may be found the panler dress of the French court. Many of these are made with kilted underskirts , and outer draperies of chiffon. Sometimes the low-placed sash Is also 1 used, threaded In and out through the drapery or half concealed by it. One of these latest importations Is a dress In which the designer has conneoted the fichu with the panier. The ftehu, folded over the soulders, continues down" the front and the back, forming panels, which are draped to lve give a panier effect. One very handsome gown is of gray satin draped bver a full skirt of silver gray crepe 4 chine. The over-dress Is quite tight over the hips, though it flares halfTray between the knees and the floor, so that it may be brought up at the front and tied at the knee line. This allows sufficient fullness for walking, which will be appreciated by American women. The cuirass has now appeared trimmed somewhat on the lines of a barber pole. Formerly, to give length of line, the decoration, whether braiding or embroidery, extended straight from shoulder to hip line, but success has made designers bold and cuirasses now appear braided and embroidered In

bands extending round and round the

figure. Many of the culroass gowns are

designed to hook under the left arm. This leaves an un." ' e at front nd back, a-. Ipa i'arry out

the idea ' plate, which formed

the rM -. cuirass.

" ' fiy of the newest cloth gowns are 'VKje with big square revers, but they are not stiff. They are merely shaped

pieces of the material allowed to fall

away from the V-shaped neck, and to

ripple gently at the lower edge in a way that suggests limpness more than anything else. While they are a fea

ture of the new street costumes, they

must of necessity be made of a ma

terial the raw edges or selvage of which

may be used In an unfinished state. A

canvas or lining would merely spoil

the big revers and take from them all

the style they have.

Pretty semi-evening gowns, called

abroad casino-gowns, are being worn

with but slight decolletage and transparent guimpes of tulle or mousseline.

The materials used on gowns of this

type are embroideries, laces or crepe

de chines, for satin seems to be some

what passe. Many of them are trim

med with deep silk fringe, and, as

the guimpe is always collarless, beauti

ful dog collars of jewelled velvet or

Jet are worn, so that the gown mar

be becoming If worn with a hat. - Perhaps the newest note in the even

ing gown - is the . appearance ot the

girdle. It is high and gives a con

trast which is artistically necessary to the fullness appearing at the top

of the skirt. This fullness necessl

tates the use of soft, supple materials to give a clinging line. Two-toned effects are shining In the evening lights. These are obtained by combin

ations of chifEon and an underdress o

satin, or by different layers of chiffon

in pale contrasting colors. Black is

also used, a true Parisian combination, Fur has been added by many designers

and brocaded silk is charmingly in

corporated in the girdle and skirt of

one of the latest models.

Qualntness of evening gowns is re

peated in styles for evening wraps.

The old-fashioned dolman is very ap parent. When made of supple ma

terials and trimmed with large roll

Ing fur collars they are a delightful

combination of clinging lines and protective warmth. The influence of Louis XVI is appearing in the evening mantles, as in other costumes. A wrap which shows the lines of that style is the tempting offer of one of the important French houses. It is a long cape, topped with a fascinating hood. The material is satin brocada veiled with chiffon. Tiny, soft frills of chiffon line the capuchon; fur edges the hood, appearing in a broader band at the bottom of the cape. Blouses for fall are really divided into two distinct classes; tailored shirt

Mrs. William Newton, 240 Plummer

avenue, Hammond, Ind., says: 'My daughter was troubled for several years

with weak kidneys and I wish to tell

how grateful we are to Doan's Kidney

Pills for bringing relief. The girl had a distressing weakness of the kidneys and bladder and the kidney secretions

looked unnatural. She had but little p.ppetite and from a healthy child, she became weak and puny in a short time, due to the suffering caused by this disease. After using the first box of Doan's Kidney Pills we noticed that she was much brighter and stronger and we continued giving the remedy to her until every symptom of her complaint had disappeared. My daughter is now in excellent health." For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. Foster-MIlburn Co., Buffalo, New Tork, sole agents for the United States. Every alternate square was buttoned back and a pleated net Jabot was laid under the others.
