Private Office. Courtecus and Confidential Treatment to One and All. 69TIMES' BUREAU AT THE STATE CAPITAL. Indianapolis. Ind., Sept. 25. -Senator Beveridge will probably be the busiest man in the state of Indiana during the next three months. He came to town yesterday afternoon and will remain in the state until the opening of the next session of congress in December, and in that time he will be expected to make several hundred appointments of postmasters and other officials In the eleven democratic districts of the state. . ?o senator or congressman in all of the long history of the United States since its formation has ever before had the amount of patronage- at his command that Senator Beveridge has on hand. It is estimated that there are something liks 400 places in the state of all kinds and descriptions that are open to him, and this breaks all records. He is the only republican senator from Indiana. There are only two republican congressmen in the state, Congressman Barnard in the Sixth and Congressman Crurnpaeker in the Tenth district. The other eleven congressmen are democrats, and in all of these eleven democratic districts it is up to the republican senator , to make the recommendations for appointments. It is not to be expected that an administration of one party would allow congressmen -or senators of the opposi tion party to make appointments to offices. Rc!ponibility with Power. Therefore the enormous power of Senator Beveridge can readily be seen, and at the same time the enormous responsibility that rests on his shoulders is equally visible. He has 400 chances to make good and 400 chances to make mistakes, and he would be a wonderful man who did not make at least somemistakes in selecting 400 public officers. In many parts of the state there are serious fights on hand over postoffice appointments. Factions are at war for the. places, and 'these fights will have to be straightened out by Senator Beveridge in the way- that will leave the least .soreness In the party. . It is said that there will be many conferences between Senator Beveridge and republicans from out in the state on the question of postoffice appointments during the coming month and that- efforts will be made to bring about settlements of many of these fights. Some of the republicans in the various places have been saying that the senator has not been making as much progress with these appointments as he should have made, and it is said also that he will be urged to get busy at once. It is pointed out, however, by friends of. the senator that he has had his hands full with legislation in congress during the last year and that this is why more has not been done in the way of making appointments. Fight a Strenuous One. "Few people realize the fight that Senator Beveridge had on hand in the tariff matter," said one of his friends, "It was so fierce and so strenuous that it did not leave him a minute for anything. He hardly had time to eat. Then after congress adjourned he had to have an opportunity to rest up a little. But he is back home now and feeling fine, and it is safe to say that he will go at his job with vigor." Several persons who knew he was coming home yesterday got to him and his troubles commenced. Among the visitors yesterday was Miss Mary Mod--lin of Greencastle. Miss Modlln called at Beveridge'8 office during the forenoon and asked to see the senator. She was told that he would not be in until later in the day. She departed, but returned in the afternoon and succeeded in getting into his private office. There she made known the fact that she is an applicant for the appointment as postmistress at Greencastle, and she made a strong bid for the place. She was informed that the senator was not ready to take up the matter of appoint

ing a postmaster at Greencastle, and she departed without any promise. Will Make Things Hum. Those who know Senator Beveridge best believe that during the next three months, or until he has to go bacs to Washington for the opening of congress, he will make things hum around his office. He looks well, and is strong Hnrt riitrareri s an iron man. and In the But with, scores of place hunters on his trail, and more scores of delegations calling on him in the interest of certain rival candidates for positions and all of the other duties that constantly jrowd upon him, his life for the tnrea months is not likely to be one long, sweet song. Some one asked Senator Beveridge as soon as he lit in the. city whether he had anything to say on the subject of President Taft's Winona speech in which he scolded the Insurgent senators who opposed the Payne and Aidrich tariff bills. The senator declined to say anything whatever on that subject. Of course, it was not expected that he would discuss the speech right off the bat as soon as he arrived home. Whether he will have anything to say about it in the future only he himself knows. Most people believe, however, that when he does speak. If he speaks at all on the subject, he will confine his comment to the mere statement that he made the fight that he believed was right and the kind that he believed the people wished him to make, and that he Is not convinced that- he was wrong. ' .' . i There is "a good deal of : talk to the effect that the speech of President Taft in which he practically read the insurgent senators out of the republican party has made a great deal of trouble in the party In Indiana, but It is pointed out on the other hand that the party will not allow any difference of opinion on the tariff question to cut any figure in the next campaign. The party it Is pointed out, will not allow any differences to arise along that line to mar the chances of success at the next state election. To do so would mean certain defeat of the party at the polls ,and it is not to be expected that the leaders of the party will seek such an end. Mrs. Beveridge and their little son will arrive from the east next Tuesday. Senator Beveridge has accepted several Invitations to speak during the next few weeks. He will speak at Washington next Sunday night; South Bend. Sept. 28: Lagrange, Oct. 8, and Indianapolis, Oct. 7.
