AN EXCELLENT THING FOR SCHOOLS. The Irving school in Hammond, had a flower show last week, in which the children were the exhibitors and the entries the product of the children's gardening. This is a feature which it would be well for all schools to emulate. There is nothing which so inculcates refinement and decency than the gentle art of gardening. What more beautiful sight in life than that of a child at work among flowers? What more natural and healthful occupation does this artifical old world afford? If all children could be taught a love of nature as exemplified by the kingdom of flowers, much of the evil and crime and their consequent trail of misery and suffering would be eliminated. If gardening was used as a means of keeping children off the streets it might prove a vast benefit to the community. Every child has the opportunity to raise flowers, whether he lives

in a mansion or a hovel. That is to say, almost every child has who lives

in Lake County. With the exception of a few tenements, houses and even

fiats, throughout Lake County, have a patch of ground both in front and

behind which affords the basic feature for gardening.

A few cents invested in flower seeds and a little healthful labor does the

rest.

The Irving school is to be congratulated on its flower show and it is

to be earnestly hoped that other schools will follow its example.

HUNG UP AS A WARNING.

A few rather narrow newspapers are inclined to froth because Secre

tary of War Dickinson has a picture of Jeff Davis hanging on the wall of his home. It would be difficult to see, however, just what odium attaches to

that. Some of us looking back through years can see by memory's aid upon

the walls of the Sunday school room of the old meeting house a picture of the devil in hell, jabbing a hot harpoon into a newly arrived consignment

of fat and sassy sinners. Did that picture's presence there signify an en

dorsement of the distinguished adversary of souls? Rather was it not hung

up as a solemn warning? In the. absence of a declaration from Mr. Dickln

son, therefore, let us not be critical of his taste in art. Fort Wayne News

"PARKS" VS. THE "SCH'S."

Northern Lake County democrats seem to be pinning their faith to the "Parkses" to almost as large an extent as the republicans are pinning their's

to the "Sch's." Whiting has Beaumont F. Parks running for mayor in the

democratic ticket and East Chicago has P. A. Parks. The Sch's in the re

publican ranks who are entered in the mayoralty class, include Schlieker,

Schaaf and Schrage and all on the same ticket, too.

THE DEMOCRATS have begun to speculate on Mr. Schaafs appoint

ments after he has been elected mayor. This is about the same as filling up the grave before the corpse is burned.- Wait till Mr. Schaaf conducts the

funeral rites.
