RETURNS FROM THE WEST. Mrs. T. M. C. Hembroff has returned to her home in Indiana Harbor from Denver, Col., where she has been for several months with her uttle daugh ter. Miss Dixie. Mrs. Hembroff return ed home by way of Chillocothe, Mo., where she visited her aunt, Miss Eliza Shepherd who also returned with her for a visit In Hammond and Indiana Harbor. Miss Dixie Hembroff was not able to be brought home and will remain at a private sanitarium in Den ver for the winter when it is hoped she will be able to return home. LEAVES FOR COLLEGE. A very enjoyable party was given as a surprise to Miss Madaline Gastel yesterday at her home, 146 Williafs street. The guests were members o the confirmation class of the Lutheran church and they met at the home o Miss Gastel early in the afternoon and spent a very pleasant social time. Dur. ing the afternoon Miss Marie Spoener furnished a pretty program of music. The remainder of the afternoon was spent with pleasant social diversions until 4:30 when the young people were invite dinto the dinning room and served with a daintily arranged course luncheon. Mrs. Fred Gastel, Jr.. and Miss Etta Gastel assisted in the dining room. A CHRISTENING. The little son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Ebert of East State street was christened Sunday at St. Joseph's Catholic church and the Rev. Father Plaster read the service of the church at 2 o'clock. There were several relatives and friends present at the ceremony. Miss Caroline Scherer and Mr. Adam Schneider were sponsors for the child, who will be called Anthony. RETURNS HOME. Miss Monta Underwood has returned home from a few weeks' vacation spent with friends and relatives in Madison and Indianapolis, Ind., where she had a very enjoyable time. A BIG SOCIAL AFFAIR. The Hammond Motor Boat club held its annual fall outing and picnic yesterday afternoon in a grove two miles above Clark Station. The club, with its friends who witnessed the boat race in the morning, proceeded up the river about noon. The afternoon was pleasantly spent In various amusements for the entertainment of the members of Lake Side Yacht club of Pullman, 111. Bishop Confirms Class Large Class of Affirmants are Received by Bishop Alerding Yesterday

Bishop Herman Alard!n of tha Fort Wayne fllocasa, yasterday noon at St, Joseph a church conflxmad a large class on his bi-annual visit for this purpose, He arrived In Hammond last Saturday evening and was the guest of the Rev, H, M. Plaster, pastor of St. Joseph's church. At 7 o'clock yesterday morn ing he said a low mass, and this was followed by a low mass at 8 o'clock by the Rev. Plaster. The Rev. Badina said high mass at 10:30, at which Bishop AlerdLng preached the sermon of the day. The confirmation followed the sermon. In the evening he confirmed at the Robertsdale Cathollo church, and from there he left for Hobart to confirm there today. He will be at Turkey Creek tomorrow. The Confirmation Class. It Is the regular month ly meeting of the society and after the usual business hour a program will be given. A full attendance of members Is desired. ENTERTAINS AT DINNER. The Misses Gertrude and Emma Claus entertained a few friends at dinner last evening at their home in Clinton street. A prettily arranged course dinner was served at six o'clock after which an enjoyable social time was spent. The guests at the dinner were the Misses Martha Meyn, Gertrude Gescheldler, Edna Euwert, Li 1 lie Fedder, Gertrude and Emma Claus. WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT. Announcement was made in Ham mond today of the approaching mar riage of Miss Jennie Margaret Hodge, daughter of Mrs. E. B. Hodge, 3746 Ellis avenue, Chicago, and Mr. George Alvln Schmidt of Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Schmidt 1738 Deming place. The ceremony will occur on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 2 and the Dr. Frank Gunsaulus will officiate. Only the relatives and a few intimate friends will be present at the ceremony. The young couple will then leave for northern Wisconsin where they will spend a month at a private hunting lodge. They will return to Hammond to make their home, 417 South Hohman street. The "at home" cards read the first and third Wednesdays after Jan. 1. Mr. Schmidt is well known in Hammond business circles as the owner of a large confectionery store in State street. The announcement of his approaching marriage will bring him the congratulations of many Hammond people. HERE OX A VISIT. The Rev. J. Lebart and family visited their many friends in Hammond Saturday and Sunday. They were entertained at the home of Miss Minnie Rlechers. 454 East Sibley street, but left last evening for Burlington, la., where the Rev. Iebart will attend the general conference of the Evangelical Synod in session now. The, Rev. Lebart was formerly pastor of the German Evangelical church in Hammond but is now at Ellenwood, Kan. A COMMITTEE MEETING. The members of the literature committee of the Hammond Woman's club will meet Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of the chairman, E. P. Demlne. in Carroll street. It is the first meeting after the lonjr summer vacation and It is desired that many of the members be present. The afternoon will be spent in a social way and will be in charge of Mrs. Jeanie Sawyer, Mrs. Minnie Kline and Mrs. E. P. Deming. LARGE CHIRC1I AVEDDIXG. A very large church wedding was solemnized this morning at 8 o'clock at St. Andrews' Catholic church In West Hammond when Miss Rose Huschlewicz and Mr. J. Blgus were united in marriage. The church was well filled with friends and relatives of the bridal couple, many of whom came from a distance to attend. The ceremony of the church was read bv the Rev. They will leave Hammond tomorrow on their wedding trip and will visit many points of interest In the east. They will return to Hammond to make their home. The day brought out a good attendance and all those who could abandon their business for the day. The arrangements for the day were in charge of Sam Abalman, who is president of the Jewish body in Hammond. A meeting will be held next Sunday, at, which time further plans will he made for the building of a synagogue. Elliott Is Elected. Word comes from Crawfordsville that Elston Elliott, son of Rev. F. M. Elliott of this city, was honored by being elected president of the sophomore class of Wabash college, on Saturday.
