ERIE'S USUAL STUNT Holiday Furnishes Custo mary Frightful Service for Erie. (Special to The Times.) Crown Point, Ind., Sept. 7. The Erie railroad is continuing its practice of playing the part of the all around hog. Yesterday when the 9:35 west ound train arrived at Crown Point, a score of passengers, the ma jority of them being women and chil dren ,were compelled to ride in the foul imelling smoking car on account of the crowed condition of the train When the train arrived at Hammond the same thing occurred, and so crowd e3 was the train, many of the women were compelled to stand all the way into Chicago. The officials of the com pany were aware that there would be heavy traffic on the road, but they made no effort to eleviate the unsuf ferable conditions. SERVICES WERE IMPRESSIVE impressive services in connection with the laying of the corner stone of St. Paul's German Methodist Episcopal church, were held in Gary Sunday aft ernoon at Eighth avenue and Connect! cut street, the site of the 4,000 struc ture. Among the ministers who took part in the services were the Rev. H. Apfelbach and . R. Wagner of Chicago th Rev. Dessmelr of Hammond and the Rev. George Deuel. It is the aim and the hope of the parish to dedicate the building on the last Tuesdiy in October. In the corner stone receptacle were placed copies of the Gary Evening Times, the Tribune, the Christian Advocate, the Bible. Discipline. A warm meeting of the Tolleston town board is expected for 4 o'clock this afternoon in view of the two franchises which are to come up. A large delegation of citizens is expected to be present O wach the progress of events. The Gary Heat, Light & Water company and the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric company of Hammond, are in competition for the lighting franchise in Tolleston.
