carpenters stood near the La Salle ho
tel. The carpenters have not called a
sympathetic strike since the big lock
out in 1900 and the fact that they have
now done so was explained by Robert
Williams, a prominent member and striker.
"This fight against Madden was sure
to come," he said. "The Associated Building Trades is simply a personal asset for Madden and it is time the American Federation of Labor sought
to change conditions here. The strik
ers are well satisfied to lose a few
days' work to eliminate Maddenlsm."

The union officials declined to do this, but promised to take the matter up last night at a meeting of the Builidng Trades Council. The council votd that the strike on all buildings should be maintained until the Otis company agreed to employ union elevator constructors. At the conference between the contractors and union officials it was said that the amount of the contracts of the Otis company on all the strikebound buildings was not 5 per cent of the cost of the structures. Contractors represented at the meeting were: Wells Bros., Lanquist & Illsley and George A. Fuller company. These would include the new city l-.a 11, Northwestern railroad depot and the Republic building. Xeed of Action Shown.
