ERIE RAILROAD'S PRESIDENT
EETS OLD III FRIENDS
A group. of conductors, engineers and oilers stood in the Polk street depot In Chicago for an hour yesterday afternoon, the while discussing the coming of some one whose name they spoke with reverent familiarity. . At times the group was augmented by other railroad men In the uniform of the service or the grease-covered Jeans of a fireman. One old gray whiskered gatetender elbowed his way rather vigorously through the group to be nearer
a point of vantage when the person whom they awaited should arrive. ' Do you think he will know me, Jim?" asked one of the men. "Why, of course, he will. You never knew Fred Underwood to forget any one he once knew, and who proved worthy of his friendship, did you?" came the half interrogotary reply. "No," said the first speaker, slowly, "I didn't. But he is president now, and I well I am still Bill, the fireman on

the milk train, and I " A toot of an engine whistle at the entrance to the train sheds interrupted further converse in the waiting group. A handsomely finished private car was backed into the station, and hardly before the brakes had been set a vigorous man of medium height swung from the platform and with , a "Howdy, boys?" instantly became the center of the expectant group of trainmen. The man was Fred D. Underwood, president of the Erie railroad. "Well, there is old Bill." shouted Mr. Underwood, reaching out his hand to Bill, who felt constrained to keep his dirt begrimed fists in his pockets. "How's thing. Bill?" 'Fine, Mr. Underwood, and I'm glad that you still remembered me," came the answer, in a slightly hesitating manner. "Remember you; well, I guess I couklnt forget our trip to Beaver Dam, could you Bill?" was the cheery rejoinder of the Erie's principal executive officer. Old Krfenda Meet Each Otber. Then the old gate tender surged through the crowd. Mr. Underwood saw the aged employe and bade the men make room. "Hello, Mr. Underwood, I'm glad for to see you," thetold man. "Mr. Underwood? Why do you call me 'mister?" slowly asked the man's superior. "You used to call me Fred, and I am still Fred to you." The old man mumbled something inarticulate and ambled away from the group. Then Tom, Dick, Harry and Bill fell in line, and all shook hands with President Underwood. As they filed away Mr. Underwood put his hand in his pocket and drew therefrom a roll of bills. These were slipped cautiously into the hands of one of the conductors, and a whispered conference was followed by the conductor saying, "Thank kou Mr. Underwood, for the boys." The president of the road was preparing a surprise for the men, in whose ranks he served before the ladder of fame yielded round by round to him in his upward climb from trackman to president.

The Other End Of It. Get this straight. It is the secret of getting rich. You can make just as much money by buying when the right thing is offered cheap as you can make by selling when people are eager to buy. And remember, finding a position, or hiring help is really a form of buying and selling, like buying and selling goods or any other kind of value. To buy to best advantage, keep a sharp watch every day, in the Market-place of the Munnimakers. The advertisers are eager to sell, or they wouldn't be advertising. Look sharp through the little classified ads. in the TIMES, and you will be astonished to find how often you can pick up big values for little money.
Dear Mr. Munnimaker, co The TIMES Classified Columns. Through a little Munnimaker Classified Ad., in The TIMES, I keep my hands busy on special orders. Manufacturer.
