BRIDE ACCUSES HUSBAND

Police Continue to Ignore Existing Conditions in the South End; Colored Man Prefers Charges Against Jackson's Place.

ARRESTS FOLLOWS TIMES EXPOSE

Prosecuting Attorney W. F. Hodges Expects no Support in His Crusade Prom Tom Knotts' Appointees, and Consequently Constables Are Ordered to Make the Arrest.

The Timeh' st:ry of the indecencies

. ,lt o'uvii ui vjaiy j

Saturday was substantiated by the subsequent arrest by constables of the city of six women inmates of the house of Charles Jackson on Madison street between Fiftet nth and Sixteenth avenues, and the arrest of the proprietor at his saloon at Fifteenth and Washington streets. The nara nf the persons charged with being inmates of a disorderly house are: Annie Jackson, Ethel Jackson, Carrie Lee, Carrie Mitchel, Lillian Harris, and Charles Jackson Cecil Green, F. R. Simon and John Adams. All gave tho necessary bond of $30 and employed Harris and P.retseh to defend them. The operations of the owner of the two places where the inmates were arrested in selling beer, in permitting gambling and in other immoral practices, were open and notorious, were exposed with numerous other "Joints" In The Times, and yet absolutely no action was taken by the city authorities to force this riff-raff contingency of the south end obey the law. Colored Man Prefers Charge. It remained for a colored man. Shep

herd King, one of the reform element, to swear out the warrant against Jackson and his employes, after he and his people had been stirred to action by the stories printed of the true condition of affairs. The warrants were served by constables rather than by the Gary police. Ail of those arrested were colored people. Their trial was to have come up before Judge lluber this morning, but the rases were continued until tomorrow morning on motion of the defendants. During the raid on the Jackson place several bottles of beer were confiscated by the constables, but the quantity which they found may not be sufficient to prove the charge of operating a blind tiger against him. A short time after the Gary constables left the place, however. Jackson was seen to

get in a fresji supply of liquor, believing that ail was safe. The raid on Jackson's place is the second that has occurred in the past four days at the instigation of the deputy prosecuting attorney, W. F. Hodges, who will devote every energy and means available to secure convictions in the cases and heavy penalties for the gross violations of th law.

After two short months of married life, James Wolf, formerly a resident

of Gary, was locked up yesterday in the South Chicago police station yesterday afternoon on a charge of wife abandonment, preferred by his bride of a. few weeks ago, who gave her first name as Daisy. The arrest of the young man Is said to be the culmination of a romance covering a period of two months. At the time that they were married it is charged that the bride and groom perjured themselves as to their ages, the girl claiming her age as 18 and the young man as 21, when they were in reality only 17 and 18, respectively. On this ground the father of the groom claims that he will have the marriage annuled. The license was issued in issued in Chicago. The case against the young man was set for yesterday, but was continued until Tuesday of next week.

LEGAL NOTICES.

PRIEST I SCORES THE nrnnifti n

urruALo

The Rev. Thomas Jensen, Sunday morning in the Gary Catholic church, scored the officials who permit violations of laws, especially those which foster the vice of Intemperance in eating and drinking. While his sermon was one of general terms and application, yet coming at a time when it did, when 'the Gary city officials are permitting law violations for intemperance, it was nevertheless very pointed and was generally, discussed by those who heard It.

HERES ANOTHER WALKER

Tells the Stereotyped Tale in Gary and Gets a Good Meal.

J. S. Chaplain, a pedestrian, who is walking from Seattle to New York on a wager, arrived in Gary last night looking very much the worse for wear. One of the conditions of the wager is that Chaplain is not to beg, but to work his way through the country. He was given a square meal at one of the local restaurants and the way he tackled the pork and beans, pie. etc., it appeared as if J. S. had been fasting for a considerable length of tfme. After a night's rest and another meal this morning, which was provided by a number of his local admirers, he wended his way eastward.
