LAKE COUNTY RESENTS THE YARN (Continued from Page 1.)
"cock and bull" story that these people have hatched up by way of a defense for their conduct. A Lively Scene? Yti. "After twontv-four hours of being stopped, arrested and chased for speeding, two parties of Chicago autoists who had saved the women passengers from 'capture' by getting them upon a railroad train, arranged yesterday to have bonds ready In all the northern Indiana tier of counties in preparation for their hearing at Hobart tomorrow. "From Friday night until Saturday evening the autoists had a series of lively times with the Indiana authorities, and they declare they are going to have a strict investigation of the proceedings. "The two parties met twenty miles east of Porter, Ind., and their troubles began at the first hamlet they passed through. A constable held them up for a time and argued about their speed, but permitted them to pass with a warning. "At Porter the town marshal and his men tried to stop the autos, but the owners distanced the pursuers. A stop was made at a farmhouse for the night.
"The next morning the travelers found the one constable of the next town waiting for them, but they slipped past. At Hobart they found the marshal and several men on guard. The marshal sprang aboard Mr. Giberson's machine and said the men and women of both parties must accompany him. There was a lively scene. In which the marshal and one member of the auto party was Injured slightly. Wants Automobile "Huslnriwi," "Then the men started full speed for Chicago. At Gary one final effort was made to stop the autoists before they could cross the state line, but they beat
the authorities by some yards and then arranged for a hearing In the several cases at Hobart. At the hearing the outoists will be represented by Louis E. Hart, who, when asked about the case, said: 4 " 'The members of the two auto parties have made charges against the marshal at Hobart for his action in boarding the car. I am assured the parties were not speeding. I wish to hear the evidence before expressing my opinion of the action of the authorities in the various towns." " 'I do not care how much fuss .they make because I issue warrants for the arrest of auto speeders and hear the cases where most convenient,' said Justice C. R. Little of Franklin park when asked about the complaints of auto owners that he seems to be making a business of having them arrested. " 'The outcry against me Is raised by a Justice In Oak Park, who wants all. the automobile business of that section for himself.'"
