OM NEWS OF THE Return From Convention. Artist Vllmer and wife have returned from the recent state convention of Photographers at Winona Lake and report an enjoyable and profitable time during the entire meeting. The attendance did not come up to former years but Mr. Vllmer reports that the exhibition of pictures greatly surpassed both in number and excellence those of past years. The diamond medal of honor, the contest for which was open to the world, with the exception of Indiana, was won by Thuess Bros., of Nashville. Tenn. Mr. Vllmer kept up his record of former years by winning several trophies as a result of the high rating accorded his exhibit. The local artist has won ten medals at these meetings. Pair Is Paroled. The two lads who recently stole the horse and- rig at Cedar Lake, Frank Kolstrom and George Burton by name, were given a happy surprise and a chance to rfdwm themselves yesterday when Judge McMahan paroled the pair, which action Is practically the same as a suspended sentence. The court required the lads to work in order to pay the costs of the case to'date and a monthly report of their conduct will have to be forwarded the authorities here in order for them to continue their life of freedom. It was a happy reunion which took place In th court house corridor between the lad's parents, and after hearing a good sermon from Sheriff Grant, which the lads will to well to profit by, the party left for their home in Chicago, the young delinquents promising to mend their ways and live an exemplary life hereafter. The decision of the judge was received with commendation and approval, giving the two boys a chance to prove that their first mistake does not place them In an institution where the making of hardened criminals is an easy matter. A young lad, giving his name as Van George, working for Tom Henderson on his farm east of town, was accused of stealing a pocket book from the above named farmer, containing $5. He went to Valparaiso immediately afterward and spent the money in taking some girls to the Wild West shows on exhibition there last week. He was arrested and brought here for a preliminary hearing which took place yesterday morning in Judge Atkin's court. The evidence was strong enough against him for the judge to hold him for trial at the September term of the circuit court under $100 bonds. The Crown Point baseball team will HEGEWISCH. A. A. COUNTY SEAT 1 play the Valparaiso nine next Sunday at the local club's grounds. Valparaiso has been playing an excellent article of ball this season and tackling some of the best teams in Chicago, and will no doubt give them home boys the game of the4r lives. Athletic rivalry between the two towns has always geen strong and a hotly contested game Is assured those attending. The report that a horse had been stolen at Cedar Lake on Sunday proved a canard and Sheriff Grant after having called out his guards, was rewarded for his efforts by being informed that the reported theft was a fake. Working all night on an imiginary horse stealing case is not what It is cracked up to be and the sheriff says that next time he and his men will have to have fairly good proof before starting in pursuit of any supposed horse thieves. There was some objecting done yesterday by Court street property owners, on account of the customary approaches to alleys and side streets along that thoroughfare not being curbed and paved as has been done in other sections of the town. The matter is being investigated by members of the board, but their decision has not been given out as yet. The reason given for not doing the work as on other completed streets is that the town's money coffers are so low that the expense cannot be defrayed at present. Willis P.
