Gun Club's Meeting. Yesterday was an Ideal day for the Crown Point Gun club's shoot and from the scores made dj' some of the contestants for the medal, it is evident that they took advantage of the conditions. Jack Hor6t proved to be the star of the afternoon meet, and made the remarkable record of 49 birds out of a possible 60 shot at. This is possibly the best record made on the grounds hfre. Harry Swartz followed next with a break of 47 out of a possible 57 shot at. The rest of the scores are given below and while not up to the two high marks, show a marked Improvement over the work done last year at this time.

Who are anxious to see the great fighter. Bills will announce the event later In the week. Crown Point will have a fine orchestra next winter If the present plans of several of the town's enthusiastic musicians do not go away. The city has about twenty or more good musicians and it is the plan of the organizers to start an orchestra with the talent, that will be a credit to the county seat. Ten or twelve have already signified their willingness and intention of joining the musical organization and tho promoters are confident of ncreasir.g the number to twenty. A Chicago orchestra leader will be engaged as teacher and con
ductor and no expense will be spared to make the proposed organization one oar excellence.

The Crown Point baseball team will have a star attraction here on the lTth, one week from today, and all the preliminary arrangements are being made to entertain a large crowd. Manager Claussen has been in communication with Jack Johnson, the heavyweight champion of the world, who Is now training at Cedar Lake, and yesterday the colored champion came to
Crown Point and made arrangements to bring a good colored baseball team here to cross bats with the locals. Johnson also agrees to have the largest crowd possible at the game and has consented to spar three or four rounds with his partner for the assembled crowd at the ball game. Johnson is doing: this simply for the benefit of the club and one of the largest crowds ever seen on a local diamond are anticipated to witness the game and see the free sparring match between the world's champion and some other good boxer. The affair will be extensively advertised and the local club hopes to draw a big crowd of
spectators from all over the county)
To all appearances Crown Point will be minus its annual circus this year, as none are billed for the town during the next two months. WHITING NEWS
Three Saloons Closed. Whiting is at present shy just three of Its wet emporiums, but whether It will be temporary or permanent remains to be seen. The saloons closed Is that of Peter Bukowskl of 12 NewYork avenue, Frank Sacher of 546 New York avenue and Sam Cohen of 446 Center street. Bukowski i's a Whiting resident for many years, having always been in the saloon business since coming to this city. He recently figured in a case in which he. was arrested for selling liquor to a minor he being the son of Lew Williams of Cleveland avenue. It Is thought by many that this is the chief reason Bukowski was refused his license, and his doors now
remain closed. Sacher was one of the saloonkeepers ln the Third ward who sold liquor after the ward went dry and whose goods were confiscated by the sheriff of Lake county. After this
trouble had blown over Sacher moved into the Second ward, which saloon he has been conducting until the present time. Cohen's license expired about
two months ago. Owing to some tech
nicality in the publishing of the li
cense, it was refused that month, and
onen, expecting .to get his license
when the commissioners met, has risked
running without a license until that
time. Now he has been refused
license a second time for runnine at
tins time without a license. Another
saloon where the license was not grant
-u was mat ot the saloon of James
Callahan at Stieglitz Park. This license
was refused because the place was not properly described. By this saloon be
ing closed Stieglitz Park, which is a
suburb of East Chicago, has gone dry,
the citizens having not a single place
n wnicn to quench their thirst. The
saloonkeepers of Whiting are lookln
at the matter from a very serious stand
point. They held a meeting yesterday afternoon for the purpose of discussing
he situation, and decided unanimously
that every place would hereafter he
closed tight on Sunday and every night at 11 o'clock. If any of them violate this law they may expect to have their
icense refused the next time thev make
application, for the "drys" are keeping
meir eyes wide open and will no violators.
