OVER THE .1 AID SOCIETY TO MEET. The Ladies' Aid society of,, the First Baptist church will meet Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. McAnally, 568 Indiana avenue. A full attendance of members la desired as the meeting will be the last ont of the season. A social hour will follow the regular business meeting, when a pleasant time will be passed. MEETING IS POSTPOXED. The meeting of the members of the Embroidery club did not take place yesterday afternoon, which was the regular meeting day, but arrangements will be made to have the next party Monday afternoon of next week. ; VISITING IN HAMMOND. Miss Lillian Johnson of Chicago is the guest of friends and relatives in Hammond for a few days. Miss Johnsou formerly lived in Hammond. ATTEND IIAMMOXD PARTY. Misses Mayme and Josephine Dorgan , of Chicago were guests at the party at which Miss Josephine Enright entertained last evening in honor of Miss Irene Mahoney and W. C. Enright. A DELIGHTFUL I ARTY. A very delightful party was given last evening at which Miss Josephine Enright entertained many young people, friends of Miss Irene Mahoney and W. C. Enright, in honor of their approaching marriage. During the evening various games and music were pleasant features. In the contest J. T. Enright won the nonors and received a very handsome piece of hand-painted china. At the close Of a very pleasant social evening the guests were invited into the dining room and served with a daintily arranged course luncheon. The decorations in the diningroom were very pret- ; ti!y carried out in red and green. Hopes of red crepe paper "and smilax were . draped from the chandeliers, to the. four corners of the room. A large bunch of red carnations and ferns made a center-piece for the table, and shaded tapers added to the attractiveness of the room. The same colors were employed in the decorations of the other rooms. Flowers and ferns were artistically arranged in large bunches and smilax was prettily decorated around the chandeliers. The young people received may very pretty gifts from their friends in honor of their approaching marriage. The following were guests: Misses Irene Mahoney, Ruth McKeown, Josephine Jorgens, Mary Rahen, Anna Carroll, Mae Towers and Josephine Enright of Hammond; Lillian Johnson, Anna Daly and Josephine and Mayme Dorgan of Chicago; Messrs. V,'. C. Enright, D. T. Enright. Fred Parry, Wilbur and George Powers. Barrel! of Hammond, and J. H. Lyons and R. T. Brenn of Chicago. A GUILD MEETIXG. The rgular meeting of the Ladies' Guild of St. Paul's Episcopal church will take place Wednesday afternoon in the guild room of the church, on Rimbach avenue. The meeting will be the last one of the season and it is desired that every member be present. important Duslnoss will come up fori discussion before the adjournment. ' HOLD PLEASANT MEETIXG. A very pleasant meeting of the members of St. Agnes' guild of St. Taul's Episcopal church took place last evening, and Miss Lauro Beck entertained at her home In Williams street. It was the regular meeting of the society and about fourteen members were present. A short business meeting was held when the routine business was over, and It was at this time that the members dec! Jed not to meet again during the summer. The next meeting will take place the third Monday in September. A very pleasant social hour followed, when various social amusements were enjoyed, after which the hostess served dainty refreshments. RETURXS FROM VISIT. Julius North, telegraph operator at the Monon, who was taken suddenly ill with appendicitis at the Instrument, submitted to an operation Friday. A number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Lenz went to their home in Saxony and surprised them in honor of their silver wedding anniversary. Among the guests were the members of the Pleat Deutschr lodge and Gilda Columbia lodge No. 44. On their arrival at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lenz they were served with refreshments on the lawn. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in a very enjoyable way with games and music, until six o'clock, when the guests were shown Into the dining room and served with an elaborate course supper. During the serving of the supper Mr. and Mr Lenz were presented with a handsome silver fruit basket, the gift of their lodge friends. The presentation was made by Mrs. J. Schneider. At the First Meth odist church on next Sunday morning, the second anniversary of the dedication of the building' will be celebrated in a great church rally. Bishop John II. Vincent of Chicago will preach in the morning and conduct vesper service in the evening. Bishop Vincent originated this service in connection with the "Chautauqua Assembly," of which ho was the founder. No sooner was the ballot announced than sympathizers of the professor were on their feet, asserting that "plenty more dirty linen in the conference waits to be washed." The ousting of Prof. Foster was declared to forecast a split between the Baptist church and its biggest school.

Representative Crumpacker Aids Relatives. Washington, T. C, June 23. Representative Crumpacker has been largely instrumental in saving the body of Leslie C. C. Morris, an Englishman of aristocratic ancestry, from burial in the potter's field. Morris came to Washington five months ago and took up his residence at tho Dewey hotel, where Crumpacker lives. He was an attractive and welleducated man and made himself liked by everybody in the hotel. He died at SibU-y hospital of pneumonia a few days ago and his body was about to be sent to a medical college for dissection when Crumpacker and a few other representatives, living at the Dewey took a hand. They held a meeting and adopted resolutions to the eeffct that Mr. Morris was "generally and deservedly poDular on account of his kind and genial disposition and his agreeable and cultured manner." Then they took up a collection and appointed a committee to have the body cremated. The committee will communicate witli the London police with a view to ascertaining the whereabouts of Morrisrelatives to whom the ashes may be sent. Bums Insult Women. Police Commissioner Thomas Swanton reports to the local police station that live or six bums are making the old G. H. Hammond Co. plant their rendezvous and that they sleep in the old buildings at night and insult girls who are on their way to work in the daytime. The police investigated the matter. Break Into Freight House. Captain J. C. Downing, the local agent of the Monon railroad, reported to the police station that some one broke into the freight office and scattered everything about the room Th oflice stationery was litti.ro. i .,n the iioor and a package of firecrack ers was broken int.. and part of them stole, it is presumed that the robbery was th work of boys. Cares for Homeless Children District Superintendent Rev. C C Heyrer of South Bend, I ml., who represents the Indiana Children's Home society was here today in the interest of the society. It is the purpose of the organization., which Mr. Reyrer represents, to find homes fr neglecte.l and destitute children. The organization is doing a great deal of good in making good citizens of children which, ordinarily might be raised in an environment of crime. Big Game Next Sunday. The old Style Lasers have scheduled a game of baseball with the Columbia league team of Hammond, o be played next Sunday afternoon, at 3 o'clock. The batteries for the Columbia b-agtie team will be Horst and Huhring and for the Old Style Lagers, Blissmer anil I'otts. The Old Style Lasers are exceedingly popular with the fans, and are drawing big crowds of supporters every Sunday.

As a result of being intoxicated Harry Grave and Fred Bowling of the Pittsburg House on Kast State street were tnlxed up iji a bad runaway, in which one of Henry Whitaker s buggies was smashed up. Tin runaway happened in front of Captain Rimbaeh's residence in 418 Sibley street. Harry Grave was taken to the police station on the charge of beine intoxicated, and this morning was fined $11. After the men had wrecked the buggy they left it standing there and disappeared, according to the report at the police stat ion. Business District Changes. So great is the building activity in the business district of Hammond that before the summer i.s over the entire appearance of the city wilfe be changed. At least six new store buildings are either In th- process of construction, and sites are being cleared for others. This fact is being remarked by every one who passes through the city.
