GiH FIRST H. S. EXERCISES

Three -Graduates Bid Adieu to Schoof Life Tomorrow.

EXERCISES HELD IN

Mis Katherine Ptton to Be the Val-

edictorian of the Day.

Thursday morning, at 10 o'clock, two ; young men and a young lady will receive th first diplomas ever given to a graduate t the Gary high school. This honor will fall upon Charles Hyman, Earl Koehlcr and Kathryn Patton, who are not only graduating from one of the finest schools of its kind in the state, but are the first to have this distinction. The exercises will begin at 10 a. m. and will bo he held at the Jefferson building, in the auditorium. The exercises will be impressive, and a large number of the friends and relatives of the graduates and those interested in the welfare of the Gary public schools are expected to be in attendance. The program, which has been prepared, is most fitting for the occasion.

The address will be delivered by Principal Edward Sargent of the Jefferson school, who has chosen for hia subject, "The High School In Its Place." This should prove an- attraction in itself, as Mr. Sargent is an eloquent speaker and his subject Is .near to the hearts of those Interested In school work. The exercises will be opened by a prayer ty Rev. George Deuel. This will be followed by a song by the school. Miss Kathryn Patton will then act as the valedictorian of the class and

! make a speech on behalf of the gradj uates. After a vocal trio, which will ' then be given, the diplomas will be ! presented to the class by Superintend-

i ent W. A. Wirt, who will make a short

! talk to the class.

! The only social feature incidental to

the graduation this year will be a big hanouet which wi'.l be given to the

graduates, board of education and fa

culty of the Gary high school immedi

ately after the exercises tomorrow by Superintendent TV. A- Wirt. This will be held at the Victoria hotel. Here, as

the board and faculty gather around the festive board to do honor to the first graduates, speeches will be made

by the board members, Mr. Virt, sever

al of the teachers and by Charles Hy-

man, who will speak for the graduates,

BOARD

ORRES

OVER PAVING LAW

The town board of Gary at its meeting yesterday butted Into several puzzling

provisions of the new cities' and towns

law. which was enacted at the last

session of the legislature. The firs snare was discovered by Engineer Mel

ton, who was preparing the plans an

Round-trip Tickets from Chicago to Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo

pacifications for the paving of the

alley between Broadway and Washing

ton Btreets and the east side of Broad

way, between the Pennsylvania tracks and Twenty-fifth street.

The trouble Mr. Melton encountered

was this: The law states that only a foundation lor a street can be used which will be suitable for four differ

ent surfaces and that specifications must be made out for each one of the surfaces. In the opinion of Mr. Melton this would eliminate every kind of

foundation except concrete, which alone can be used with four different surfaces. It also prevents the Gary town board from using sand as a foundation

for their brick pavements, which they have found considerably cheaper and almost as serviceable. The law also

stipulates that all of the pavements

should be modern, and it is a question where a sand and brick pavement would be recognized as modern.

AVunt a Street Opened. The city attorney has been in

structed to look into this matter thor

oughly before the engineer starts on

the specifications for the new pavements. The city recognizes the fact

that if the specifications for the pavement does not come up to the letter of the law the contractor will not

accept the work, because the bonds would be invalid and impossible to sell.

Another matter which worried the

city fathers yesterday was the opening of Washington street across the

Pennsylvania tracks. The people on that thoroughfare believe that they have been blocked up enough by the railroads of the city, principally by the Michigan Central and the Gary & Western, and that they should be given the opportunity to cross the Pennsylvania. The petition was presented to the board by George Baker, who argued that the people of Washington street were not being treated right by allowing their street to be blocked by the Pennsylvania railroad.
