NEWS OF THE AUTO RACES

As a plain statement of fact, many! of tba most prominent taxpayers of Crown Point are not enthusiaetio oyer the iresnce of the speed Jovers. "So much excitement, noise and confusion Is more than we care for," said one leading lady of quiet Boclety. "Of course, we cannot see the races ourselves, for we would not think of leaving our property unprotected with so many rough looking people in our midst." She refused to be assured that bena.th the soiled khaki beat many a $500 watch and that driving gloves covered numerous diamond sparklers, all testifying to quick, certain and honest prosperity. "This course is as muoh like the Vanderbilt cup track as night is like day," said George Robertson, who drove the winning Locomobile In the eastern event. "It is all they offer us," he continued, "and we will make a fast race of it, for a number of drivers have

been offered a premium to beat the Vanderbilt record of sixty-five miles an

hour."

the thirty entries will be closely watched by their admirers. Two races will

be run, the first on Friday and the second on Saturday. The wwMb record of 97 miles per hour is expected to be

shattered, providing the weather con

ditions are favorable. The home stretch on the track mapped Ht is about nine miles long and the race

along this section will bo lightning-

club from all damages in case of accident, giving this promise in writing

Nevertheless, it appears that everybody who can frame an excuse wants to be in the danger zone, according to Gen

eral Executive Trego, who Is pestered

on every hand for rasses.

Starter Fred Wagner and Referee Asa Payne wll arrive today, all of the

others, workers and shirkers, being on

the ground. Feeding the masses, as wel as the olasses, Is a serious prob

lem In this truly rural town, where "home oooklng for the home folks" is . slogan. "Ham and egs, with four fds and reverse. Is the bill of fare

i. re. at all times," declared Dentsoo of the Knox today, and nobody contra-

d eted him.

At almost every residence In Crown Point and at the farmhouses around

the course, preparations to care for im mense orowds continued with vigor to

day. The best houses In town have let their spare rooms as a matter of civic duty and on nearly every shop, on

tents and sidewalks stands apears the

invitation "Meals." There isn't going

to be any surplus of accommodation

it is said, for Chicago will run special trains to the course at the rate of three

every twenty minutes after midnight tomorrow and Friday, while others are scheduled from all the big cities in the

central west.

General Executive Trego made the necessary arrangements today for the

establishment of two field hospitals, one

at the grand stand, where a doctor and

nurses and an ambulance will be sta

tioned, and the other at Lowell, where

similar arrangements have been made.

BesldeV these two depots for the in

jured, if such there be, there will be

eight first aid to the injured corps, lo

cated at different parts of the course.

In the meantime the greatest dis

patch is being employed in the condl

tioning of the road. Oilers, sweepers,

scrapers and rollers were out all day,

with the exception of the two hours n the afternoon between 2 and 4. when

the official practicing was going on

and the work is rapidly nearlng com

pletlon. General Executive Trego said that by Thursday morning most of the course will be in excellent condition. One bridge which It was necessary to plaster up with concrete today will be fit for heavy travel by Thursday. The afternoon of that day will find the course In almost perfect trim.

Lowell, Ind., June 16. Kodak fiends

were in Lowell yesterday getting snap shots of the racers as they made the turn around Death Corner, which with

the cemetery corner a little farther east are considered the most difficult on the course.

Wheeler and Hildebrandt's grand

stand, Salisbury and Jourdain's, the

University club of Hammond, and Carter. Cralck and Freels are looming up on the east course and control the best

sides within a radius of two miles from town v on the east leg. On the west

course Hayes and Daugherty's stand.

and the Half Way house grand stand. Knight and Lamberg's stand on the

S" curve are all ready for the big

crowd who will undoubtedly see the races from these points of vantage.

The souvenir book program to be sold

in these stands contains an excellent

map of the course, showing the loca

tion of the west sites selected by the

owners for parking spaces and gTand

stands, and those wishing choice seats and views will do well to consult these

programs and guide books.

The natives are making prepartlons on a larges cale for the advent of the race-seeing population that will invade these parts toward the end of the week. Parking privleges have been established at many of the roads which will cross the course and wildcat stands have been erected at the so-called dangerous portions of the track.

SOX CLEAN UP New York, June 16. Manager Billy Sullivan and his band of white sox cleaned up the highlands yesterday afternoon by taking the final game of the series Into camp, 7 to 3. It was the third victory for the Chicago men since they landed here last week and as they left for Boston they looked pleased with their visit here and quite at peace with themselves. If they can keep up the pace they have been holding since leaving home on this trip they should be back In the first division before they reach ome next Sunday.

"KILLING" MADE BY THE GIANTS

The fastest time made yesterday was by Strang, who covered the course in 24 minutes, thereby giving a gigantic scare to a willing and reckless scribe who was looking for a sensation.

The story has been started that it will be impossible to get over the Main stret viaduct, across the course, after 7 a. m. Friday without a military pass. This is bunk pure and simple. The soldiers nor the C. A. C. have anyright to keep people from crossing over the viaduct, and have no intention of so doing.

About twenty-five local auto enthusiasts are planning to attend the great Indiana automobile races at Crown Point Friday and Saturday. The race will be one of the greatest events of the kind In automobile history, and
