WcWhirter to Meet Proctor ! on Question, ' 'Resolved,! That Prohibition of Manu-1 f acture and Sale of Intoxi cants Is Right." TIMF.S iii nmi, AT ST A T K CA 1'ITA I.. Indianapolis, lnd., June IS.- The fact that State Senator Robert K. Proctor of Klkhart ha.s agreed to cngaR in a Joint debate (in the prohibition question with l-Vlix T. McWlurter. the lending ! h i bit nist of Indiana, has thrown the brewers into a lot of excitement. They cannot understand how in the world Senator Proctor was induced to do such a tiling. The debate is to tie held at Tom li nson hall, tills city, on the night of June The subject of the debate will he: 'Resolved, that tho prohibition of the manufacture and sale of intoxicating beverages is right.' MeYVhirter takes the affirmative and Senator Proctor the negative sid.- of the question. 'IcH hirtrr Wiim C:uilila te for iov. The iiniiortance of the event is seen in the fact that MeYVhirter was ttie cyididate for governor on the prohibition ticket and he is now the treasurer of the prohibition national committee, i,, a.ftiition to all of this he is a rood speaker and has every prohibition arerunier.t at his tonprue's end. No other prohibitionist in the state could have been chosen who would have tilled the bill in the debate like MeYVhirter. On the other hand Senator Proctor i3 the recognized lender of the wets in Indiana. He fathered the Proctor-Tom-linson bill for the repeal of the county option law in the last session of the legislature, and. although defeated, he made a pnni lii;ht and won the admiration of everybody hy his pameness. He made speech after speech on the liquor question in which lie predicted the downfall of any party that proposed to limit the liberties of the people in this manner. Some of his speeches were oratorical gems. Then, since the legislature closed Proctor has been the chief wet speaker in the various counties of the state in which local option elections werv held. He lias spoken in many count h.s and has gone the limit In his arguments for the retention of the licensed saloon. In fact. Senator Proctor and Mayor Koso of Milwaukee have done nearly all of the "wet" speaking that has been done in the state. Ilrfnern Arc Alarmed. So. when one measures the two men who are to take ,;irt in this debate It s seen easily that it will bo the hiersrpst tiling of its kind that has been pulled off in ltdiat-a in years. Hut the brewers of this city are alarmed over the tli-jissht "f having such a debate in Indianapolis just at this time. They say l). is is ro time for such a tiling. Kverything is going along well for them here just now and they are willing to leave tilings :,. they are. but they fear that this debate will stir up and agitate the liquor o,r,..s:bm to such an extent as to bring on a local option election in M.iri in cvini. They do not want a 'oca! option election. "1 can't understand why Senator Proctor fc'.i into this tiling." said one brewer y.-sterday. "Pur may be he can be sick on that date so that 1;" cannot come i.ete to ti:i the engagement." The brew is are doing everything in their power to have the debate called off. but it is not btlc ved they can do it, for Rev. Mr. Jeffords lias S.-nator Proctor's acceptance in wrltir.ir.
