Com-

of

(Special to Tub Times.) East Chicago, Ind., June 11.

mencement week Is on. Yesterday It was Inaugurated by a concert given In the evening by the high school chorus and other musical organizations belonging to this institution. THaTevent took place at the auditorium, Indiana Harbor, and from a musical standpoint it was an immense success. The public, however, did not turn out to as large an extent as the quality of the affair, and the time and effort entailed in its preparation would warrant. There were only about 150 persons present, the audience being

composed with but few exceptions East Chicago residents.

Program Carried Oot In Detail. The program was carried out exactly as planned, and those participating did not allow the smallness of the crowd to mar tho quality of their work,' and the concert was a credit to Miss Mary A. Stone, who directed it. j The boys' quartet and the double quartet made the biggest hit perhaps, and their responses to encores were "in a lighter vein," the selections they chose for these numbers being laughings songs and nonsense jingles. The girls' chorus was especially good, with Flossie Plckard as soloist, In the selection, "There Little Girl, Don't Cry." The program was as follows: The Evening's Program, II Trovatore Verdi (arr.) Lillian Williams, Florence Lewis Sunrise A. E. Johnstone Chorus Spring Song Duerrner Boys' Double Quartet There, Little Girl, Don't Cry E. Campion (arr.) (Washington. D. C, June 10, 1909.) Senate. With the woolen schedule of the tariff bill still under discussion, repeated efforts of the "progressive" republicans to break the ranks of the Aldrich forces were defeated. Numerous amandments offered by Senator Dolliver looking to a reduction of the finance committee's rates were voted down. On request of Senator Bailey at the day session a vote on the income tax was put over until tomorrow. The evening session was devoted to speeches by Senators Gore and LaFollette, both in advocacy of lower wool rates. Mr. LaFollette offered a number of amendments to the wool schedule. At 10:50 o'clock the senate adjourned until tomorrow. House. After being in session eleven minutes the house of representatives adjourned today until Monday. Although

there was a good representation of members, there seemed to be no disposition to transact any business and little was undertaken.

Historic Bailleytown is to have a convent and as a result Gary will have a young ladles' academy at its doors. Baillytown Is a charming place on

the Calumet river and along the route of the South Bend inteuruban line. It

Is seven or eight miles east of Broad way.

History says that the first permanent settlement in this part of Indiana was made there. More than a century ago a French-Canadian fur trader named

Bailley do Messein settled at the spot described. The sand duns of Lake county contained no beauty yet a few miles removed from it is located one of the most beautiful places In Indiana.

Here the trader made his living deal

ing with the Indians. When he died

the estate still remained in the family Anally passing into the hands of th

recent owner, Miss Frances Howe, his granddaughter, who is said to have

sold it to an order of nuns for convent

and school purposes.

No doubt the sisters recognized Gary

as a good field to draw pupils from. The location and surroundings are Ideal and of a good academy is established Gary young ladies will patronize It.
