OF FEDERAL PATRONAGE Indiana Politicians Must Look to Republican Senators for Plums in Eleven Districts; Crumpacker, However, Has the Whole Say in Tenth.

TIMES BUREAU AT TILE STATE CAPITAL. Indianapolis, Ind., April 2S. I G. Rothschild, better known ae "Baron," Is the busy-one these days. The Baron Is the custodian of the federal building in this city, and surveyor of customs of the port of Indianapolis, and is regarded as the man next to Senator Beveridge in Indiana In all things political. It seems that every man in the state that wants something in the way of a political job lays down on the Baron in the hope that he will do something for him. The Baron's office at the federal building Is the Mecca of republican political pilgrims these days, and It Is seldom that it is empty of them. Beverldgo Control Patronage. The Importance of the situation 13 understood when it is pointed out that Senator Beveridge controls absolutely all of the federal patronage In eleven of the thirteen congressional districts of the state. There are only two republican congressmen in Indiana now, Barnard of the Sixth and Crumpacker of the Tenth, and all the rest are democrats. So it is up to Senator Beveridge to make selections for all of the postofflces and all the other fed eral places in the eleven districts, and this is a gigantic Job. And on top of all of the ordinary run of offices to be filled during the two years to come, there are the census Jobs to give out. These will be a eupervisor in each congressional district, and eleven of these will fall to Senator Beveridge to se lect. All of the assistants and depu ties In the census work will be ap pointed by the district supervisor. These are all good fat jobs, and there is a horde of applicants. And it is one of the Baron's jobs to look them over, so they seem to think, for every man that wants one of the places is after him. Crumpacker Makes Own Appointments, The census appointments are likely to be announced soon. Of course, Congressman Crumpacker will make his own selection in the Tenth district, and. Congressman Barnard will do the same in the Sixth. Senator Beveridge has nothing at all to say as to appointments of any kind in these two districts. It is said here that Congressman Barnard and James E. Watson, former congressman from that district, have

had a falling out over the distribution of offices in that district. For a while after Watson cot out nf nffi

and Barnard got in it looked like Watson, was still running things, and he was giving out the Jobs in the district, and this situation caused com ment among a good many people. They wondered why Barnard allowed Watson to dictate to him in the selection of postmasters. But the word comes now that this is all off, and that Barnard is doing his own choosing. Watson Is in Washington lobbying for some interest on the tariff bill, but Just what it is has not reached the ears of the folks at home yet.
