Gary Is in the midst of a building boom at the present time such as has never been seen before in the history of the new steel city. Hardly a day passes but what several new residences are started, and all indications point to the fact that the building of new home this year will exceed all the other years put together since the plans of Gary wero made. Not alone in the first subdivision are new residences being constructed by the score, but in the territory south of the "Wabash tracks buildings. and residences are springing up in large numbers. The call for new houses In Gary has caused the moneyed man to Invest his surplus money in residence and business property, thereby giving him a stable Investment that he could gain in no other manner. Local contractors and builders are rushed with work, which promises to keep up during the entire summer and fall. A Times reporter made a round of the principal streets in Gary yesterday afternoon, in the first subdivision, and found there were over 108
residences and flat buildings now in
the course of construction. Many of
these are nearlng completion and oth
er new buildings are started. Yesterday
afternoon the surveyors for the Gary Land company staken out seven lots for new buildings in the first subdivision. These will be started at once. It is estimated at the present time by
a Gary contractor, and one who keeps
himself posted on the local building
situation, that there are at least 300 new residences being erected in Gary.
Funny Men There. S. E. Keiser, of the Chicago Rrecord Herald, and "W. D. Nesblt, of the Chlca
go Tribune, .were the star attractions last evening at an entertainment which the Gary Masonic Social club gave to
Its members.
It was tho last entertainment of the season, and compared favorably with
those given earlier in the season.
Both of the authors read from their works, they being the authors of sever
al well-known literary productions.
Positive assurances was given the people of Gary this morning that the Lake county directory, which is now in the printers' hands, will be oft the
press by Saturday, April 23. The pub llcation of this valuable book Is eager
ly expected by both the public and the
men behind It.

The meeting of the club ladies yesterday was the first in several weeks on account of the Lenten season. The party was very enjoyable, all the members attending. The fact that "blind tigers" are in

A most thrilling escape was seen yes
terday afternoon on Broadway between
Fifth and Sixth avenues where the new Ohio building is being erected, when a large stone, weighing a ton, broke
from the ropes which were hauling it
to the top of the building, and the huge block crashed to the sidewalk
thirty feet below.
Several of the workmen were standing near at the time and one of the
men was almost directly underneath the stone, steadying it as it was hauled to the top of the building. The latter
just had time to jump from beneath it when it crashed to the sidewalk. A hole in the sidewalk was made a foot deep and a foot wide. The damage to the concrete sidewalk, however, was the only damage done, as the stone was practically uninjured. The place where the stone hit the sidewalk is traversed daily by hundreds of people and It is most marvelous that either the workmen or a pedestrian was not killed.

Paris, April 16. An unusually large demand for tickets gives evidence of the public interest displayed In the finish fight at Wonderland tomorrow night between the American negro heavyweights, Sam McVey and Joe Jeannette. The fight is expected to settle the long-disputed question of supremacy between the two big iregroes. A few weeks ago they met In a twen-
tyround bout, and the referee, after first declaring Jeannette had won, re
versed his decision in favor of McVey.
Interest in the coming battle has been
increased by the fact that the winner will probably be matched to fight Sam

Have Plenty of Coal. Bieker Bros, dispute the story to the effect that there Is a coal famine in Hammond. They say they have plenty of coal on hand, have never been out of a supply. Bieker Bros, say It Is true that some of the other dealers are out of coal, but If any one wants coal they can find all they want at the Bieker establishment. II. F. Meikle stated that, while he has been out of coal for several days, he has a supply of several carloads coming, which he expects to have on hand today.
