THE CALUMET PROBLEM
Xew developments in municipal af-
Kairs give increased Importance to coun

wharves and bridges Is about to go
through a like transformation.
Much of the work of harbor Im

A peculiar fact .bout the construction
of this ditch Is the fact that after it
is completed the Calumet river will be made to flow in two directions. From
the Tolleston dam westward the stream
will flow into the Grand Calumet river.
and from the dam eastward the river
will flow into the lake. This will mean,
according to Mr. Melton, that the river

George Manlove, attorney for Mike
Einzen and George O'Donnell, two of
the Gary saloonkeepers who are trying
to illegalize the Calumet township re
monstrance on the grounds that a ma
Jority of the signers were not legal
voters, believe that Juage Charles Han-
ley of Rensselaer, who has been ap
pointed by Judge Virgil S. Reiter of
the Lake superior court as special Judge in the case, will not be able to
serve.
Judge Hanley's term of court begins at the time that the case would come to trial, and the dates are so conflict
ing that it Is believed that another j Judge will have to be chosen. The plans that now seem likely to be adopt- ( ed are for Judge Reiter to name three attorneys ln the county and have each of the parties strike off a name, the remaining person to sit as Judge In the case. The saloonkeepers are anxious to have the case come to trial as soon as possible as they have a fighting chance to win their case, they believe, and the sooner the remonstrance would be knocked out the sooner they could again start in business. At the present time, however, it looks as if the saloons could not possibly open up again for a year, for should either side lose the case it could be appealed and the case could not be tried for several months to come. In this manner the advantage Is all with the remonstrat-ors.
