Mr. Bowser started his speech by heaving a perceptible sigh of relief as he spoke the words, "I am looking into the faces of friends." Mr. Bowser's remarks on the court question were In brief: "Every man who enters the legislature and become involved In a court fight, is bound to be crucied politically on that cross. O'Connell wu acquitted upon tbe first
ballot taken by the Jury. It returned
Its verdict of "not guilty" after being out lesa than half aa hour.
Valparaiso, Ind., March 12. The
evidence In the Walter O'Connell murder case, which has been going on at Valparaiso for several days, was all in
last night, and this morning the Jury went out to deliberate on the verdict.
Walter O'Connell of Miller's was tried
on the charge of murdering the illegi
timate child of Mrs. Martha Paulson of that place. The manner of smothering the child is alleged to have been terrible.
The child was first wrapped in a
number of blankets and thrown In a
closet and afterwards dumped in a
swamp. The fact of the child s mur
der came to light when an effort was made to hire an old man to bury the child. The defense Introduced a letter said to have been written by Mrs. Paulson last week to O'Connell, in which she said that she did not know whether or not the child was dead when it was handed ot him, and that she was sorry for what she had said against him at the former trial and hoped he would
forgive her. At the trial just closed, Mrs. Paulson denies writing the letter, but the defense produced two witnesses who said they saw her write it. The case has attracted a great deal of attention in the eastern part of Calumet township. There are a number of people who are said o be very much interested in the case and every possible effort was made to prevent its coming to trial. The state is represented by Prosecuting Attorney Charles Greenwald, assisted by Attorney D. E. Boone, and the defense Is represented by Attorney W. J. McAleer of Hammond. Aetna, Ind., March 9, 1909. "Walter O'Connell Walter I didn't know that the child was alive when you took It from the bed. I want you to forgive me the wrong I have done you. MARTHA PAULSON." The above letter was one of the sensations in the O'Connell murder case, which went to the jury today at Valparaiso. Attorneys W. J. McAleer, Ibach and Sravens, and George Bardon, who
are appearing for the defendant, claim that this letter was written in good faith by Mrs. Paulson. Attorneys Charles Greenwald and D.
E. Boone claim that it was secured by Mrs. Bothwell, who secured tie statement from Mrs. Paulson under duress. The letter caused quite a flurry In the court room, and the attorneys for the state say they were able to prove that the staetment was secured by Mrs. Bothwell at the suggestion of one of the attorneys for the defense.

New Y'ork, March 12. James J. Jeffries said today that Al Kaufman, who
last night challenged him to fight for
the heavy-weight championship, had no
chance of getting a fight with him,
nor had "any other white man." After declaring that ho did not know whether he could get Into condition
again to meet Jack Johnson, Jeffries
said: "If Johnson had been a white man
never would have thought of fighting
again. I would have stayed in retire ment for the rest of my life. 'How can I tell whether or not

The high, school gymnasium will be the scene of the last basket-ball game of the season tonight. South Bend high school and Hammond will fight for championship honors. When these two teams met at the first part of the season Hammond came out victorious, but South Bend has been greatly strengthened and has had a great deal of practice and experience In preparation for this game. A large number of tickets have been sold so a large crowd is absolutely assured. As this is the last game the team will play on the home floor, the school especially desires your attendance for it is absolutely the last time you will everaee these boya in basket-ball action for Hammond high, achool, because most of the team that will play tonight are senior.
