, 1IA.VB ISTERESTISG MEETING. " Progressive Court. Xo. 166, Tribe of Ben Hur met last evening In the old Masonic temple on State street for one of the largest and most Interesting meetings ever held In Hammond. The meeting -was unusually well attended, there being about 200 people present.
The Hammond court wai well represented, and many visiting members also came to be present. A class of twentyfive candidates was Initiated during the evening, the largest class in. this district of the state. The degree work was done by the Fernwood Court, No. 40 of Fernwood. III. The service was

Hildreth Green, Louisa Mann and Emma Miller- wrvsd on the refreshment committee and acted on the entertainment committee during the social hour which followed. The next regular meeting will take place in the K. of P. hall Saturday evening, Feb. 6. The supreme deputy, ,C. O. Fife, has
been in Hammond for several weeks preparing for the meeting last evening and a great deal of the credit for the success of the meeting Is due to him and to Dr. Mary E. Jackson local medical examiner.
SEWIXG CIRCLE MEETS. Mrs. Caroline Dlbos was hostess to
the members of Sewing Circle No. 1 of
St. Margaret's hospital yesterday afternoon at her home In Fayette street. About twenty ladles of the society attended the meeting and spent a pleas
ant afternoon playing cards. Pedro
was played and the prizes -were given
to Mrs. W. D. Weis and Mrs. Mat Klein.
Mrs. Mat Boney was awarded the consolation prize. Two guest prizes were also given at yesterday's party and Mrs. Fred Krost and Mrs. Frank Ililbrlcn were successful In winning them.
At the close of the afternoon the hos
tess served a delicious luncheon. The
next meeting will take place in two
weeks at the home of Mrs. Eder In
Condlt street.

pleasantly with various games and mu

Bishop Fredrick F. Johnston of South Dakota, will come to Hammond the latter part of next week to be the guest of the Rev. Charles Albert Smith
at the rectory in Rimbach avenue. Mr. Johnston was a classmate of Mr.
Smith's. A special service will be held In St. Paul's Episcopal church next
Friday evening, Jan. 29, and Bishop

KETl'RX FROM WEDDING VISIT. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Glffen have re
turned from a wedding visit spent in Nebraska and North Dakota and have taken up their residence at 751 Hickory
street.
IS IMPROVING NICELY. Mat Scherer, who has been very ill
at the Alexlan Brothers' hospital In
Chicago for the past month. Is improving nicely now as his many friends

MET YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. The Martha Society of the First
Christian church met yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. McNutt In

ly business meeting. A short business meeting was held when items of importance to the members were disposed of. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in sewing until 5 o'clock
when the hostess served dainty refreshments. About twenty members were present yesterday. The next meeting will be a Joint meeting of the Martha and Deborah societies at the
home of Mrs. Will Lah, 402 Plummer avenue, next Thursday afternoon. A full attendance of members Is desired.
INSTALL OFFICERS LAST NIGHT. The annual installation of officers of
Pioneer council. Royal League, took place last evening. The Installing of
ficer was C. E. Fowler, of Indiana
Harbor, advisory archon of Indiana. The officers were:
Archon Edward F. Fox. Vice Archon Frank Waller. Past Archon James B. Ortt. Scribe Norman Strouse. Orator Albert E. Towle. Collector- Claude D. Palmer. Treasurer William F. Mashlno. Sentry Edward W. Davis. Warden Max Schmidt. Prelate John Powell, Jr. E. S. Philpot, of Chicago, was pres
ent as a representative of the Supreme council. He congratulated the local council upon their growth and stated
with the new admitted members last evening, that it is now the largest
council In the state.
Mr. Fowler invited the local council to attend the Advisory council session
at Indiana Harbor on the the 29th Inst It was decided to charter an Interurban
car and provide fre transportation to all members to this meeting, which will
be one of the best of the year.
Preparations were- also made for a
dance to given at the new Masonic
temple on Lincoln's birthday. INVITATIONS ARB OUT.
Invitations were sent out today by
Unity Council, No. 726, Knights of Co
lumbus, for an entertainment and dance to be given in the Masonic temple, Wednesday evening, Jan. 27th. The
affair Is given in celebration of the sixth anniversary of the Hammond
council and it is expected that many

tend. A dance will follow the enter
tainment. The party is expected to be
cne of the pleasantest of the year. BACK FROM BUSINESS TRIP.
Otto Klemperer, manager of the Lion Store Furniture department, returned to Hammond, last night from a ten clays' business trip to Grand Rapids,

The Deborah Aid society of the First Christian church held a masquerade
and box social last evening at the home of Mrs. C. Trafley, 613 Truman avenue. There was a large attendance and many novel and pleasing costumes were in
evidence. A pleasant program was
carried out during the evening and
at a late hour a box supper was served
About $23.00 was realized from the sale
of the boxes which will be used for the benefit of the society and the

Fred Herwig will leave tomorrow evening for Akron, Ohio, to spend his
vacation with relatives and friends

HAVE PLEASANT MEETING.
Mrs. Kralowitz entertained the members of the Fleurdells club very pleasantly yesterday afternoon. All the members were present at the party and passed the afternoon In an enjoyable way with cards. Several games of pedro were played and the honors of the afternoon were given to Mrs. John Huber and Mrs. Borman. At the close

bands and invited friends all attend. The program will begin at eight o'clock and will Include "An Evening With Dickens," by Mr. J. Sterling Battis of Chicago and piano selections by Prof. Clark Learning and vocal numbers by Mr. R. E. Garber. At the close of the

ternoon was passed in the club's usual way with embroidery work after

ENTERTAIN AT CARDS. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Lockwood gave
a very delightful party for the mem
bers of the Euchre club last evening at her home, 11 Doty street. Euchre was enjoyed during the evening and pretty prizes were awarded Mr. and Mrs. C.
B. Miller. At the close of the games
a delicious luncheon was served. The next meeting will be held in two weeks.
HOLD BUSINESS MEETING. The members of the Musical Art so-
coiety met yesterday afternoon at 4
o'clock in Weis' hall on State street for quite an important business meet
ing. Arrangements were made for a
musicale to be given the first week In
February, at which time a very de
lightful program will be given. Mrs. E.
F. Johnston and Mrs. T. W. Oberjin re
signed their positions as president and secretary of the club and the offices
were given to Mrs. H. C, Groman and Miss Dora Otto. At the close of the business meeting the usual rehearsal
took place. ACME SOCIAL CLt'B HAS PARTY.
Mrs. C. P. Burgman entertained the
members of the Acme Social club at a pleasant afternoon party yesterday at her home In Condlt street. All the members were present and passed the
afternon enjoyably in playing cards.
The prizes were won by Mrs. Miller
and Mrs. B. Kenny. At the close of the games the guests were served
with a dainty course luncheon. Mrs. P.
J. Henry will be the next hostess and will entertain in two weeks at her
home in State street.
