EAST CHICAGO ID HARBOR LOOK FOR A GREAT YEAR
Real Estate Activity in Twin Cities Is Especially Promising and Many New Buildings Will Be Erected.
(Special to Thb Times.) East Chicago, Ind., Jan. 7. That real estate activities In East Chicago and Indiana Harbor are especially promising1 during the coming year Is the consensus of opinion of local dealers in real estate, as expressed to a Times representative this morning. Business depressions of the past year have had the effect of quieting the boom prices which have heretofore sustained local real estate and for the next twelve months preparations will be made for the conduction of a conservative campaign on conservative prices. Panic Didn't Matter Much. ; Probably no city in the Calumet region weathered the recent panic any better than did East Chicago and the Harbor. "While other cities were confronted with dire necessities, the mills 6f this locality, with but one or two exceptions, continued to run at nearly their usual capacity. Prices of lumber and building materials were lowered and the people of the "city were Impressed with the necessity of InVesting their money in homes and income-bringing flats. ; "During the past year," said an Indiana Harbor man, "there has , been a constant building of residences and flats In this city. In fact,' the business operations of this nature have been as good as In any year In the history of the city. There will be no drop off of the activities during the next year and I am confident that there will be vast Increases In the sales of every real estate man In the city." Flat Building Under Way. Building Commissioner Spaulding reports very favorably on the building of residential properties In the Harbor. Several flat buildings, especially in the southern portion of the city, are well under construction, while business blocks and cottages are to be seen In various stages of completion throughout the business districts. Local contractors are also well pleased with their labors during the year and are preparing to handle even more work during the ensuing building seasons. Among the large building- contracts to be allowed within the next few months will be the new Barker department store, which Is to cost in the neighborhood of 130,000, 'the Commercial Club building, .costing 115,000, and the Walter J. Riley office building. ,Aidefrn. -these -few instances, real estate men declare that they are about
to close deals whereby several large
buildings will be erected In the heart of Indiana Harbo and the business district of the city given splendid advancement . New Department Store. In East Chicago, George "W. Lewis reports that within the next few days a deal will be closed with a .Chicago man whereby the property at the corner of Chicago and Magoun avenues will be purchased for department store purposes. This will mean the extending of the business section of the city for another block west-ward. Business buildings are already under construction In various parts of the city, Albert Given and Ike Specter having recently signified their Intention of erecting expensive structures on Chicago avenue. The postofflce building is undergoing a practical remodeling and when completed will bear no resemblance to the old edifice. On Chicago avenue there are already two two-story brick buildings waiting for tenants and the owners of these buildings declare that they are considering rental propositions from large Chicago business men. . "Residence property is to be Improved more during the coming year than usual," was the statement to the Times' representative by a well-known property-owner. The improvements will be mainly by the erection of cottages for speculative purposes. Building materials are moderate enoueh in
permit the man who has been saving and scrimping for years to pay for his property to commence work on a home for himself and family. There will also be considerable building of residence flats, one real estate man having requests for properties on which threo of this class of buildings could be effectually erected. Weatlngbonae Talk. Acreage property will not figure so greatly in the operations of local business men, although rumors are current that the Westinghouse Manufacturing company, of Pittsburg, are contemplating the purchase of the 700-acre Forsyth tract east of the city. Should such a plan reach culmination, real estate in the new Ladd and Smith addition, near McCook avenue, will be much. In demand and should bring fancy prices.. The city council Of East Chicago during the past yearihas been' especially active "in the improvement of the
streets, but few of the 'weiKknnw'n
thoroughfares of th city remaining IP3
without substantial pavement of some kind. Sidewalks and sewers will be constructed during the coming year and the streets of the city put In the best possible condition. The street car service between East Chicago, Indiana . Harbor and Gary has now reached the stage of perfection when it becomes an Important factor in the purchase of homes. Several Gary mill-men have already purchased homes in East Chicago and are using the lnterurban line in
going to and from their work. New Colonial Houae. The Park addition to Indiana Harbor, owned by the East Chicago company, already has a large number of the colonial style residences in evidence. It has been practically impossible to secure tenants for these properties, however, as there are not proper sewer and water facilities. The large westend sewer, now being constructed by the Green & Sons company, of Chicago, will eliminate this objection and within a year every house in this particularly beautiful section of the city should be opened to tenancy. Considering the real estate conditions of the city from every standpoint, the status of activities might be summarized in the mere declaration that "business conditions are healthy." East Chicago will make itself felt in the business activities of the ensuing year and should enjoy all the prosperity that its energetic and aggressive business men are able to bring to it.
Wants Women Hat leas. A minister in a Brooklyn Baptist church requested the women, of his congregation, to take off their hats, and furthermore informed them if there was any woman who did not want to take off her hat she could go home. The hats came off. He told them that in the days of Corinth the headdress of a woman was the badge of servitude, and he declared that in Tokyo he bad seen a crowd mistakf a woman's large hat for an 'airship.
Thin Beyond Bella. A stalwart Irish soldier, after being
In active service for some time, became greatly reduced in weight until he was so weak that he could hardly stand. Then he was invalided home. On his arrival in England, just as he stepped from the train, one of his old friends rushed up to him. "Well, , well, Pat," he said, "I am glad to see ! you're back from the front!" "I knew I'm getting thin, but I nlwer thought you could see that much,"N rejoined Pat.
The Spanish Main. The Spanish Main in the old Dirate
'. days meant the circular bank of is- ! lands forming the northern and eastern boundaries of the Caribbean sea, beginning' from Mosauito. near the
Isthmus, and including . Jamaica, St. Domingo, the Leewards Islands and the Windward Islands, to the coast Qfr Ven.esu,e;a, in South America.
