GARY SEEMS LIKE: A BIG MIRACLE (Con tinned from pice 0.)

A trained writer visited Gary recently and said more than 8,000 acres lying where the shores of the extreme southern end of Lake Michigan project into Indiana has been acquired by the United States Steel Corporation. A square mile of land will be covered by stert mills Mone, This tract has the most admirable connections for transportation by rail or water of any tract In the United States. Ten railroads now enter the town of Gary. A neat harbor Is now well "under way of construction. This harbor, when completed will be a mile long;, 250 feet .wide, with concrete docks and twenty -- five feet of water. Half a mile off shore the lake in its natural state Is deep enough to float the company's biggest ore carriers. With such favors of natural advantages the company plans a city of municipal comforts, reasonable rents " and conveniences for the home builder that are almost unparalleled by any other location on earth. rromise Is made of 60-cent gas and water and electric light of the ' best kind at equally low rates. - The first "sub-division" of Gary is to have twenty-seven miles of paved streets, with waer, gas, electric service mains and excellent sewers available to every lot. E. H. Gary, chairman of the United States Steel Corporation, says: - "We are spending about $1,500,000 a month at ; the new plant and I cannot give any estimate of how much additional ' is being spent by other interests, including the railroads. , The Lake Shore and the Baltimore & Ohio are moving their main lines one mile south, which, I understand, will require a relocation of their tracks for fourteen miles. Waterways and canals to cost $10,000,000 are being planned and surveyed, the main channels, 250 feet wide, with lateral channels 200 feet and turning basing 800 feet in diameter every, two miles. The Calumet river, which runs sluggishly for several miles along the route of the main channel of the canal system. Is to be deepened, straightened and bordered with wharves. Here are a few outlines of the boldest and. best imagined industrial project ever launched. It is taking shape at Gary, where Lake Michigan crowds farthest south into Indiana. Waste land formerly lying three miles distant from a small postoffice has been given a value of $140 a front foot by the mar

velous porgress being made In the construction of this new city that was born to greatness less than three years ago. In less than four years more it should have a population of 100,000 inhabitants. The natural advantages and central position of Gary , mark it for all, time as the most available location for manufacturies on;the American continent. Midway between -the-Atlantic and the Pacific, the northern lakes and the gulf, connected by rail and water with the commerce of the world, nothing can stop the development of industrial enterprises of the grandest magnitude at this point. And there will be demand for homes and business locations that will mean fortunes quick and sure to the fortunate holders of realty in this spot that a great and powerful industrial corporation is determined to make a great city. . The main street, 100 feet wide, with twenty-foot sidewalks, is called, Broadway and divides the town into east and' west This street leads from the residence district on either sid up to the steel mills.- There will be two parks, one on each side of Broadway, eight or ten blocks in extent. There will also be two excellent school houses. All sales of land on Broadway are made with the sole purpose of building the town In a moFt substantial manner. Discerning men some three years ago recognized the great possibilities that lay in real estate Investments surrounding Gary. Especially was the great future of dock property and real estate located in the vicinity of Broadway apparent to them, and they were not slow to seize upon these opportunities.

There is more Catarrh In this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly falling to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable Science has proven Catarrh- to be a constitutional disease and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured bv F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market It is taken internally in doses from 10 drop3 to a teaspoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address: F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, Ohio.. Sold by all druggists, 75c. " Take Hall's Familyi Pills for constipation. - - ... j

but a short time until numerous other small industries, which have already made applications for Bites, will locate in this city and Increase the population and increase the value of real estate. As stated before in the Times there have been over one hunderd small industries who have sought to locate in this city, and many of them will secure location in the course of a few months. Gary therefor ends the old year with a brilliant record, and a still more remarkable future before her. Looking forward to the new year of 1909, one can discern many important developments which will mean much to the welfare of the city. Among them are the advancement of Gary from a town to the dignity of a city, with more than .double Its present population, the steel plant in practically full operation, but still continuing their construction work, the great advance In real estate values and many other pleasant probabilities, or rather certainties, which will help to make the day as bright as the New Year which has Just been celebrated.

Capitol Reflects Nation. Every great nation is proud of Its capitol. Every great state In the union has lavished millions of dollars in the adornment of Its capitol. Every important city, whicli is a miniature commonwealth, should have a noble capitol, or city hall. In the chief building of a municipality is carried on the business which concerns every citizen.
