Maneuvering Is Outlined for Legislature in the First Battle for Simon-Wickey Contest Eye for Eye, Tooth for Tooth Policy. BOTH PARTIES ILU1G TO PURIRTJLECTIONS Tenth District Will Stand By Re publican Candidate Gets Assurances From All G. 0. P. Members That They Are With Him to the Finish. TIMES BUREAU AT THE STATE CAPITAL. Indianapolis, Ind., Dec 26. The question of the Wickey-Simon contest in Lake county, in which Kdward Sim on, the democratic candidate for representative, is contesting the election of Representative Edward W4 Wickey, who was declared elected by a plurali ty of more than 1,300, was widely dis cussed among the representatives. Representative Wickey come from the Tenth district, and all the Tenth dis trict representatives, except Kliver, were here. At a meeting at the Claypool hotel yesterday Mr. Wlckey was elected chairman of the Tenth district delegation. The Tenth has a larger republican representation than any other district in the state. ' Tenth District -with Him. The Tenth district men will stand by Wickey In the contest in the legislature. Mr. Wickey declares that he has had assurances from the republicans in every district that they will support him, even to the point of ap pealing to the senate to give aid. Ac tion by the republicans would proba bly be the only thing that could keep the democrats of the house from un seating Wickey in case they should de cide that that was the thing to do. Senate Has Check. In the house the democrats will be in the majority and will be able to unseat whomsoever they please. In the senate the republicans will be in the majority. Mr. Wickey believes that if the democrats in the house attempt to unseat him the republicans in the house should give the democrats in the house to understand that a demo cratic senator will be unseated in the senate. Mr. Wickey believes this would GOOD TEA LESSENS TILE ANNOYANCE OF LIFE There was a time when i was quite generally claimed that tea was the greates blessing of .Providence .to man- ,. Tea is the best stimulan to exertion. It lessens the annoyances of life, and it is claimed that there is nothing so good to quench thirst and it revives the drooping intel lect. But the tea must be right, the quality must be better than what is common ly sold. J. E. Brennan, No. 148 So Hohman street, has the kind that is highly commended by the best judges. It is a se lected Japan tea of selected crop and sells for 50 cents per pound. The demand is active and is increasing daily. Give this tea a tria and above all cultivate the tea drinking habit. be nothing- mor than fair. Both Parties Guilty. "Mr. Wickey was elected by a plurality of more than. 1,300." said one of
the Tenth district men." It may be-1 that there ' 'were Irregularities among: the republicans at election time In Lake county. But there were irregularities among the democrats, too,' and It was merely a. question of which party could do the most. There la no reason why Mr. Wickey should be unseated. Representative Gil Elliott of South Bend declared that there was no more reason for a contest in Lake county than there was in St. Joseph county or several other counties. "They will have to go some if they unseat Wlckey," said Elliott. First Clash, of Session. , It is said that the republican state organization feels the same way about it. One of the leaders of the state committee declared that whenever the democrats started to unseat Wickey in the house there would be things doing n the other branch of the legislature. There is little doubt that the Wick-ey-Simon contest will cause the first clash in the legislature. It is largely on the irregularities in Lake county that the democratic candidates for state offices are basing their contests. These contests are backed by the demo cratic state committee. Both, party committees will be lined up in the Wickey-Simon contest in the house. Stricter Naturalization Laws. It was stated by several of the rep resentatives who attended the meeting that this contest should no be allowed to interfere with the passage of laws designed to purify the elections. The t democrats are favoring Jaws that will require a foreigner, to have lived for five years in the United States, and to have been fully naturalized before he may vote. The republicans also, it is said, will aid in the passage of such a law, but they will not by any means admit that the republican party has been wholly to blame for election irregulari ties in the past. Which Could Do the Most. "I am for a law to purify elections," said .Representative Brown. "I believe foreigners should be residents of -the United States for five years before they are ptrmitted to vote. But in the last campaign in Lake county the democrats were just as guilty of irregularities in election work as were the republicans. It was merely a question of which party could do the most of it It was thought that the question of the selection of a floor leader for the republican side of the house would be taken up at this meeting, but some of thoe who attended said J.he subject was not mentioned. This will be left to the caucus to be hetd just before the sessions opens. Ton will find that it la the merchaats who are advertising in THE TIMES are the oaes who are doing the business.
