Edward Sailer in the Toils and Faces the Penitentiary for a Term Says He Tried to Play Joke on His Friend No Humor in the Law From Weil-to-Do Parents.

(Special to TuA Times.) Indiana Harbor, Ind., Dec. 24. As a jfclimax to as nice a piece of detective .work as has ever been accomplished in Lake county, Officer Mike Gorman, of Jthe local department, last night arrestied Edward Sailer, a resident of this city, on a charge of attempting to commit robbery. Sailer was found on Pennspyrvania avenue, fact-to-face with L. Mark, a foreigner and demanding the latter to share with him the proceeds of a $40 check, which had just been

cashed. His demands were made more

forcible by the use of a 22-calibre revolver , which he shoved under Mark's tie? 3. In the arrest of Sailer, Chief of Po

lice Higgins believes that the author of many mysterious hold-ups in Indiana Harbor has been located. Suspicion was laid at Sailer's door several nights ago

and his steps were shadowed by Officer

Gorman in plain .clothes. Last night,

the suspect was seen on Pennsylvania

avenue in company with his prospec

tive victim and the policeman instantly

decided that "something was doing." Fallows Ills Victim.

Following closely behind the pair, trom fragments of their conversation

lie learned that Sailer was trying to get possession of the foreigner's pay

check, issued by the Inland Steel com

pany. Mark refused to deliver the check, but said that he would cash it

himself and then buy a few drinks

With this in 'view, the couple headed for Cohen's Auditorium buffet, -tfhere the money was received. Mark then

declared that he would not purchase! any drinks except at his boarding place on Pennsylvania avenue, a wellknown saloon. When but a few feet away from this place, Officer Gorman saw Sailer grasp his companion by the threat and again make demand for the money. The foreigner, surprised at seeing the sudden display of nerve on the part of Sailer, managed to "break away and grasped the door of his boarding house, Sailer In close pursuit. Just as he was about 'to re-Iterate His demands, and threatening to shoot Mark he made an out

cry. Officer Gorman took a hand in the

little game.

Showing his star, and shoving thrs

cold, blue muzzle of the large colt revolver under the fellow's nose. Officer Gorman commanded him to "hand over his weapons, which Sailer did with alacrity. He was then marched to the city jail and afterwards taken to East Chicago by Chief Higgins. ' 1 Offers an Excuse. Here Sailer declared that Mark had atttacked him and that he was only using his revolver, in self protection. He afterwards changed his tactics and said that he just wanted to see how badly he could scare his companion. In the light of past events, however, Chief Higgins does not believe that the man

Although the W. B. Conkey com

pany Is rushed to death with business and has orders enough ahead to last

for the next nine months, Mr, Convey has decided to give hi employes a ya- ,

cation oyer the Christmas holidays, until Monday. Mr. Conkey says that business has not been so goo4 In the

last five years as It is now. and at this Christmas holiday season he points with pardonable pride to the fact that

his plant ran all through the recent hard times and employed a number of people while others were shut down. The Inland Steel company at Indiana Harbor plans to close down today and will open again until Monday.' This will give- the men a fine 1 Christmas holiday vacation and will be : greatly appreciated. . - ' ; Many of the other Industries in Indiana Harbor will also close and so far as it is possible to learn Saturday will

be as much' of a holiday as Christmas In most of the cities of the region. ".

All of the churches In the region are

planning more or less elaborate Christ

mas exercises and there will be a Jolly

time in store for the little folks In scores of Sunday schools. . The Xmas spirit is abroad In the land." -

Township Trustee F.' Richard Schaaf

is the happiest man -in Hammond . today. He has ' received a Christmas present from the school teachers of North township which he says is fit for the president of the United States. But it is not its intrinsic value, as great as that is, so much as the fact that he is remembered by the school teachers over whom he has had con

trol during the past four years. The present, which Mr. Schaaf has received from the school teachers is a massive, solid brass, desk set. This consists of a bookholder, a match box

holder, cigar rest and ash tray com

bined, a paper knife, a curved blotter

holder, a stamp box, an ink well, a

spindle, a wax sealing o'utfit,' an im

All of these articles were of the

heaviest brass and Mr Schaaf, himself,

says that nothing could have been pur

his liking. : Remembered By Beverldge.

. Deafness Cannot Be Cured. by local applications, as they 'cannot reach the diseased portion. -of the . ear. There is only on way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it la entirely closed. Deafness is the result, and unless the Inflammation can - be taken out and this tube restored to ita normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which Is noth. ing but an inflated condition of th mucous surfaces. rolling mill. He has not worked for

some time, however, finding it much easier to take other people's money than work honestly for his own. His little escapade, of last night, however, may prove his undoing, and it looks very much as though he will have to spend at least ' two years of his life in the Michigan City prison. The man's home Is said to be in Sharon, Pa., where he ha,s well-to-do parents residing.
