Following the victory of the republicans in Gary the rumor became current in Gary today that the town would soon be made a city, necessitating a city election, probably in the spring. The fact that this has not been done long ago when Gary first acquired the requisite number of inhabitants, 2,500, was due to the fact that as yet there had been no tryout of the strength of the political parties, and neither knew to a certainty whether or not they could risk a city election at that time. On Tuesday the voting strength of the parties was established. It was found that five-eighths of the voters are republican,' but whether or not they could hold this great lead in a city election Is a question. Upon the decision of the republicans on this question largely rests the action which will be taken next spring. May Hold Off Vntll Next Spring.
Many persons regardleas of the political significance feel that Gary should be made a city because of the greater latitude in self-government which is allowed a municipality. There is no one who desires to cast discredit up
on the present administration, as their
conduct In the office of town trustees seems to be met with general approval. Although the air is pregnant with
reports of an attempt which will soon be started to make the town of Gary a city it has not as yet reached a tangible stage. There Is no question but what there are a number of men
advocating the action today, but it does not seem probable that It will be
done before spring.
The population of the city, judging
from the poll and from the vote cast
Tuesday, Is above 15,000, so that the town has been entitled to be made a municipality several times over. The number of residents of the city who
were not entitled to vote is also ab
normal, owing to the remarkable daily
ncrease In the population.

IMPORTANT SESSION
OGGDHSer WEEK
Gary Real Estate Board
Will Be Held on Tuesday, November 10.
DISCUSS THE WATER SYSTEM
John W. Alwood Will Be the Prin
cipal Speaker at the Meeting.
An important session of the Gary real estate board will be held next
Tuesday at 12:30, Nov. 10.
The meeting will be held at the Gary hotel, where a table de'hote luncheon will be served at 40 cents a plate. The luncheon has been set for the purpose of bringing all the real estaet men out as there are several important topics that will come up for discussion. John W. AlwooU, the engineer who designed the Gary water and sewer system, will be the principal speaker. His subject will be: "The Want of Sewerage, Drainage and Ship Canals In the Calumet Region." W. H. Fitzgerald, the president of the organization, will preside and will call on other speakers to discuss the problems. Experts from Chicago are expected to attend the session who will participate In the talks. Will Dfseusa Sanitary District.
Since the movement was set afoot
to create a sanitary district the drain
age and sewer problem of Gary is being looked at In a new light. The opinions about the project are still
divided, especially since the backers
of the Burns' ditch are most numerous
in Gary. As far as the town of Gary is con
cerned it has solved the problem of drainage and sewage, but it .is alive to the fact that while It may be doing everything in its power to make the city healthy that the other cities by
emptying their sewage into Lake Mich
igan are nevertheless polluting the Gary drinking water. Were it not for the fact the sanitary district would not
affect Gary very vitally.
