Y CAETER AND BROWN WIND UP CAMPAIGN IN GARY Democratic Candidate for Sheriff Jlakm House to House Canves. Republican Candidate tot Commissioner Running Strong. Fred Carter, democratic candidate for sheriff, was In Gary yesterday puttingin a strenuous day of campaigning-. Carter almost made a house to housa canvass In the steel city, and aside from meeting his friends he spent some time la putting his cards up In nearly every window in town. Mr. Carter is popular In the south end -in Gary and will probably run ahead of the balance of the democratic ticket. In addition to Carter, Matt J. Brown of Kagle Ceek township, candidate for county commissioner, spent the afternoon in Gary yesterday and met a number of the republican leaders. Brown has proved popular in the steel city, and he has a number of staunch friends who are working here for his election. Mr. Brown has been spending several days in the north end of the county, but the trip to Gary yesterday wil be his last during the present campaign. GARY REPUBLICAN PRECINCT COMMITTEE MEN TO MEET Final Arrangement of Setting Out the Vote Next Tuesday Will He Made. General Arrangements Will Also Be Discussed Tonight. This evening the precinct committee men of the republican party will hold a meeting in their various precincts for the purpose of arranging for the polling of the vote Tuesday. Here the workers in the party will be assigned to various places and duties, and other matters of general arrangement will be looged after. CARRYING CONCEALED WEAPONS Officer Newman last night arested two men in the south part of . Gary on the charge of carrying concealed weapons. They each pleaded guilty in court this morning and were fined $16.90 a piece. They gave their names as Dan Wolf and George Caesare. ASK TELEPHONE COMPANY FOR FREE SERVICE Make Application by Tomorrow a.i Corporation Wants to Give Its Patrons the Election Returns. All persons' wishing the benefit of the Chicago Telephone election returns in Gary will kindly notify the company before tomorrow morning. The returns will be furnished free of charge to all telephone subscribers every half hour. The returns will be from the county as as well as state and national returns. Manager Sinclair of telephone company said yesterday that he had already received numerous requests for the returns in both Gary and Tolleston. MICHIGAN MEN OPEN THE ECONOMY BAAZAR General Fair Store Opens Tomorrow In Gary Former Fostoffice. E. C. Fierce and W. I.. Paltlcn the Proprietors. E. C. Pierce and W. L. Paltlen of Flint, Mich., have moved to Gary and have rented the building formerly occupied by the postoffice and will open a general fair store with all kinds of notions and like grades. The name of the new store Is the Economy Baazar and will be open for business tomorrow morning. DEMOCRATIC CLUB HOLDS A MEETING Presidential Candidate Will Speak From a Dary Tomorrow Xltrb. The Uemocratic club or Gary held a meeting at their headquarters on Washington street, between Eleventh and Twelfth 'streets, yesteruay evening and made arangements for the coming of Bryan on Saturday. The plan of building a platform was abandoned as it was thought more practical to have a dray decorated for the occasion and have Mr. Bryan speak from it. The dray will be located near the elevated tracks of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern railroad and Mr. Bryan will be conducted from the train to the dray as soon as his special gets In. Warner, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Warner of Winona, Minn. Mr, Brons is the well known cigar merchant and the wedding occurred at 9 o'clock Wednesday- morning after which, the young couple left on an extended tour of the western states. The wedding took place in St. Thomas' Pro-cathedral with the Reverend Father Galllgher officiating. The church was beautifully decorated and the ceremony was In the presence of many friends and relatives. The bride was given away by the father. MANY GARY PEOPLE ATTEND T0LLEST0N LITERARY The Tolleston Literary society of the Beveridge school gave a musical entertainment at the school last night. Many people from Gary attended the; entertainment and speak in high terms of the program rendered by the- pupils. VICTORIA HOTEL INSTALLS A TELEPHONE SWITCH BOARD The Victoria hotel has installed a new telephone switch board exchange and are now able to give Its patrons the benefit of the service. The new exchange has seventy-five terminals. SQUIRREL HUNTERS NUMEROUS AROUND GARY Squirrel hunters are numerous about Gary and many of the local nlmrods are also having great luck duck hunt ing. Several camps are already pitch ed near Gary on the Calumet and it is said that the ducks this fall are there in large numbers. Mrs. William Cannon is visiting with friends and relatives In Wanatah this week. Coroner E. R. Gordon of llobart was in Gary today on professional business. Some of them are already looking ahead to the next social event to be given by the organization, as their first banquet was such a great success. M. Passarilll, the Italian consul, of Indianapolis was in Gary yesterday on business in connection with the accident on the Michigan Central railroad which happened some time ago, 1 n which an Italian was killed. A few more thousand copies of the Chicago Journal scattered about Gary and the entire vote will go republican I POLICE STATION NOTES Work on the new house for chemical wagons on the corner of Sixth and Broadway, will be started the first of next week. Officer Gus Newman will have charge of the building of the new structure. A stove will be kept in the house all winter to prevent the cheml' cala from freezing. Yesterday all the officers at the sta tion received their monthly checks. The local police are looking forward to the arrival of their new winter uni forms and overcoats which will be provided for all the officers. The last winter's apparel of the police are get ting rather thin for this kind of weath er and the new uniforms will be welcomed by them. The Gary police have been unusually I fortunate In arresting and capturing all those accused of breaking the law. Their are very few towns the size of Gary, where crime has been so ram pant that has the record that the local police force has In bringing criminals to justice. Very few law-breakers get out of Gary before they are landed In the local station. Testerday was house cleaning day at the station and the whole force of prisoners Incarcerated in the jail wero set to work by Sargeant with brooms and brush and in a short time the station was spick and span. MBS. DOWD'S GOAT GETS THEIRS Mrs. J. Dowd, who lives at the corner of Eleventh avenue and Madison street had a thrilling experience with a goat. She had the brute tied up in her back yard when It chewed the rope In two and got away. She saw that the pet had escaped and went out to capture it The animal thought too much of Its freedom and started to butting Mrs. Dowd all over the lot. A call forhelp was sent to the police station andthepollce officers soon had Mr. Bill Goat safely In the police sta tion, odor of the animal Is too much for the prisoners, however, and there is a regular mutiny among them. GARY I0LK WILL SEE "Old Arkansas," one of the most pop ular of the melo-dramatic plays now on the road, will be seen at the Gary theater next Sunday night. The play is one of the best which Manager Mc Ginnis has been able to book for the season, and one of the best which has ever come to Gary. ROGERS & WOLF ON TRIAL TOMORROW Mea Who Are Accused of Shooting Bough I'p for Hearing Tomorrow, The case of Walter Wolf and William Rogers, who were arrested on the charge of robbing a cash register in Frank Bough"s resort in Gary's Ten derloin district will be arraigned on Saturday at 1 o'clock. Mr. Bough's . hand is getting well rapidly. The young men will be given a preliminary hearing and if the evi dence warrants it will be bound over to the Lake Superior court on a charge of highway robbery. CRUEL TO E0RSE AND IS FINED Phillip Jacob was arrested yesterday on a charge of cruelty to animals and was. fined $1 and costs, amounting to $14.90. He is charged with unmercifully beating his horse. The man's conduct was called to the attention of a police officer and he was arrested.

The Epworth League social at the Methodist Episcopal church last even ing was a pronounced success, about twenty-five couples participating in the features of the evening. The committees proved delightful in their ar rangement of the evening's entertainment, Hallowe'en tales and customs being indulged in until a late hour. The Lake County Steam Laundry, of Block avenue, recently discontinued business. The laundry was one of the first to open in the Harbor, but during the past year has not prospered well. causing the abandonment of the com pany's interests. Mr. and Mrs. B. L.
