A large number of republicans from Gary attended the republican rally and barbecue at Crown Point Saturday and also the rally at East Chicago in the evening. Owing to the poor transportation facilities to Crown Point there was not nearly as large a crowd as there was at East Chicago from Gary. They were all enthusiastic over the
meeting and plan for an even greater one when 'Senator Beveridge comes to

Tickets on Interurban are Transferable and Good For Thirty Days. The Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend line started Saturday morning to sell 54-ride commutation tickets between Gary and Hammond. The price of the tickets are five dollars. The tickets are transferable and for the present they will be good for only thirty days although Manager Wallace is onscldering the extension of time.
All the republican live wires went
down to the county seat on Saturday
and among the other good things got
their fill of roast ox. Reminded them somewhat of the celebration at Gary some time ago when the first cargo
of ore steamed into the harbor.
Gary, among other things. Is gaining
in notoriety having sent its first case

It Is almost to good to be true, said Gary man this morning, that the
Gary and Interurban have started to
pave their right of way down Broadway.
Evidence plainly showed that during his epeech here Mr. Gompers has not got but a few of the Gary laboring
men eating out of his hand. Don't allow pessimism to embitter your life with the thought that winter is here and that coal is going up. Remember that Indian summer is not yet over. From the present outlook," indications point to tho fact that the building contractors will be kept busy until long after the snow flies. This year in Gary will be equipped with a handsome and long line of -voters. , Local merchants are putting the light weights on the mothballs and are" prepared to do a "big fall business in the heavies. Minister Wu Ting Fang confesses

He received an awful Jar.
The thousands stood 'round to hear.

The football hero here has donned his moleskins in Gary and the local corps of physicians have been notified
accordingly.
No wonder Gompers was treated harshly in Gary, when it is known that this is the season of killing
frosts.

In discussing state finances Mr. Wat

it has been in fifty-two years. "Under my admistration we will wipe out every dollar of it," said Mr. Watson.' This statement elicited applause and the
speaker then took up the county local option issues. "I want to talk to you a moment about that," he said. "If I

Flagg is preparing to have a coon hunt some time thl3 fall, in which the attorneys of Gary will participate. It is the plan to shoot all game that can be shot and whichever of two sides, that will be chosen, gets the least number of points, will be made to pay for a supper which will be given. The plan of the prosecuting attorney seems to meet with great favor among the attorneys to whom he has broached the matter and the hunt will undoubtedly take place some time this fall.

CtiURGH ir-EMBERS SORE Congregationalists Assert
That They Were De
frauded of Money.
The members of the Gary .Congrega
tional church, according to the report
of a number of them, are indignant be
cause of the action of the proprietor of the Orphans' Candy kitchen, .'John Lincoln, who they claim virtually de
frauded them of considerable money.
The trouble started over what " the
members of the congregation asserted was a promise by Lincoln to supply them with candy at the benefit performance given for them in the Lyric theater. It is charged that he announced at each of the plays that candy would be sold at each of the performances by girls which would pass them among the audienee, and that the candy was donated by himself. ' The girls disposed of about $27 worth and the candy man demanded half of the receipts. This was turned over to him by the girls, who wished to avoid trouble. The men of the
congregation, however, have taken the matter up, and may demand that the money which he promised them be returned.
The first gs.me to bB played by a
football team under the colors of the
Gary high school was a victory for the
local team with the husky aggregation
of East Chicago as the victims. Gary
proved the master of their adversaries
in every department of the game. In
the second half the struggle was a
beautiful one and stirred the loyal
rooters into spasms of delight. The
score was 11 to 5.
Nearly seventy-five rooters aecom
panled the Gary team to see them
play their first game. Colors and yells
in profusion were prepared for the occasion. The Interurban car which
left Gary at 1 o'clock in the afternoon
was crowded with one of the most en
thuslastlc crowd of fans that has ever
invaded a city in Lake county. Gary' Fumbles Ball.
The game was called at 3 o'clock and both sides started In with a rush. Gary in their over anxiety to make

The nominee reiterated his pledge to
preserve the county local option law
and reviewed the record of the republican party on temperance legislation.
"County local option Is in our party! platform," said Mr. Watson, "and when
my party puts a thing in its platform
and then nominates me on that plat
form I propose to stand by it."
BOYS ON A LARK. After the speaking was over there
was a renewal of the cordial hand
shaking and the candidate addressed many of the people he met by their
first names. He was then taken in
charge by the members of the Young
Men's Republican club of Hammond,
who placed him on one . of the floats
from which the horses had been detached and with the aid of a hundred willing hands the wagon was taken ground the court house squarrel to the Commercial hotel where the speaker was placed In Guy Clark's automobile and driven to Hammond. There he ate his supper and afterwards went to East Chicago where he addressed a crowd which Judge Virgil
S. Reiter says was twice as large as any political meeting which was ever
held In East Chicago. The crowds

members extended every effort to make tile meeting under ' their auspices a grand success, and their labors bore the desired fruit.. .The .committee worked in harmony and every detail, from the arranging of the decorations to the introduction of the speakers of the evening was worthy of the highest commendation. The parade, while not as large a demonstration as could have been desired, owing to the failure of some of the delegations to show tip in time to participate, was excellently managed, red lights, torches and banners displaying to the public the cause espoused by the assembled marchers. Two bands, Barnie Young's Hammond organization, and the Twin City band, twelve pieces, under the leadership of Kelson De Lors, furnished the music, martial in character and Inspiring as well as decided, in rhythm.
Attorney Joseph A. Meade, president of the local organization who is considered one of the most able young politicians in northern Indiana, introduced the Hon. E. W. Wickey. who in a few words, eulogistic of the man, called upon Senator Hendee, of Madison county, to address the crowd. Senator Hendee's remarks were well received, and he was followed by William E. Kllver, candidate for joint representative of Lake and Newton counties. Mr. Kllver received an admirable demonstration and fairly carried his audience away by the force of his statements. After a few numbers by the "Old
Shady Quartette," who have never sung for a defeated candidate, Hon. James Ell Watson, the man who has
astounded the industrial, as well as the
farming regions of -Indiana by his masterful oratory -and evidences of selfconviction, was introduced. The demonstration that followed was wonderful. For five minutes, the 2,500 persons packed into the hall, fairly rose in their sets and echoed, and reechoed the name of "Jim Watson," "Our Jim," throughout the hall. Never was a candidate on any ticket given such an enthusiastic greeting as was Mr. Watson. Chairman Schaaf was highly pleased with the East Chicago meeting and praised the members of the Young Men's Republican club In the highest terms for their activities. The results of the rally may be summed up in the mere statement that East Chicago's majority for Watson on Nev. 3 is now assused. In addition to the various county candidates who attended the meeting, was David Meyers, candidate for Judge of the supreme court of Indiana. Mr. Meyers won many friends during his brief visit here, and convinced everyone that he is a valuable man to have on the ticket at which Mr. Watson is the head.

was the star ol the game, he making both touchdowns for the locals on long brilliant runs. The sturdy left half back twice dodged the defense of the opponents and ran for fifty yards, where he placed the oval between the goal posts. He also made good consistent gains through the lines before they could check his advances. Bolby and Hyman also proved good ground gainers and were especially Btrong on the defense. The history of the game in short was superiority in offense and holding their own in defense. Oat for the Championship. The Gary team is now a step nearer the championship of the county. They do not expect, however, to land at the top this year owing to the heavy
team of the Hammond high school, but aside from them they feel that they
can hold their own with the remainder.
The Gary aggregation are light, not averaging over 135 pounds, but they are 6peedy and full of ginger. All of the players are young and have the
making of a splendid machine in years
to come. Most of them will be back

to look out for them. The Gary team lined up as follows

Democrats Expect to Have a Good-Sized Crowd at Meeting There. Tomorrow night Thomas E. Marshall, democratic candidate for gov
ernor, will, hold the biggest democratic ' rally of the year in the steel city. The preparations for his reception are not elaborate, but because of his prominence It is expected that he will draw a big crowd. The meeting will be held in the Binzenhof hall. The members of the Gary democratic club in a body will meet Mr. Marshall when he arrives in the city, headed by the Gary band. They will then escort him down Broadway to the scene of the celebration. It is not known at the present time whether or ' not he will come to Gary from Crown Point, where he speaks in the afternoon,, by automobile or by interurban. There will be no parade aside from the delegation which meets him and takes him to the Binrenhof hall. A
strenuous effort will be made by the democrats to counteract at this meeting the deep inroads which the republicans have made upon them in their Crumpacker meeting, and other successful rallies, and also to have it as successful as possible, as the Beveridge meeting Saturday night. Both of these meetings will be the biggest of the campaign for the republicans, and
democrats of the steel city. A big crowd is expected tomorrow night from Hammond, Indiana Harbor.Whlting and East Chicago to hear Marshall
speak.
Valparaiso Boys Certainly
Show Up Team Which Had No Practice.
The Gary football team was defeated by the Valparaiso team at Valparaiso by the score of 32 to 0 in a game that
was viewed by 500 people yesterday.
The Gary team attributes its defeat
to the fact that it has not had enough
practice. The team is composed of ex
college players and was considerably
heavier than the opposing team.
Tsupnau of Gary was the referee, and his decisions were considered fair in
every particular. An interesting side
light on the game is the fact that
Valparaiso made 20 of its' 32 points in
the first half of the game. Shackelton Goes In.
Roy Shackelton went in the game in the second half and held the oppos
ing team 10 one toucnaown. xne sec
ond half was very Interesting and the
Gary boys showed considerable improvement under the leadership of the
well-known Purdue player.
Both teams worked the forward pass
with good results and the gains made by this play were important. Gary's defense was poor and they were unable to withstand the onslaughts of the
Valparaiso boys.
The lack of training on the part of the Gary players was shown by the fact that three of them were knocked out and had to be carried off the field. The boys who were injured were the Gardner boys and H. McClure, the quarter back. The Gary team is scheduled to play Lowell next Sunday at Lowell and it is expected that the steel city boys will be able to give a better account of themselves by that time.
It is sparing: neither money nor labor to promote the advancement of Gary. It is building a model city of homes. It handles exclusively, property in the FIRST SUBDIVISION, that part of Gary where all public utilities are now installed, such as water, gas, sewerage and electric lights. All residence streets boulevards. - Gary will be, not only a manufacturing town, but an EDUCATIONAL CENTER, a city of schools and churches, an ideal place for you to build a home, a place where your sons and daughters will have exceptional opportunities.
