FROMSQUTH CHICAGO Six Hundred Men Will Make Homes in Gary With Removal of Industry. YARDS NEARLY COMPLETED New Steel City's Gain Will Be the Other's Loss Monthly Payroll' Is $200,000. By the 15th of November one of the South Chicago industries, employing at least 800 men, will move away.,. It was learned yesterday by a Tiwes re porter that the big shops of the Chlr cago. Lake Shore and Eastern rail road, located at Eighty-sixth street and Superior avenue, will be moved to Gary, Ind., by the middle of next month, which, will cause in the neighborhood of 600 men to make their homes In the new steel town. Many of the officials and office men of the road have already been notified that the change will be made at that time and they were asked to be in readiness at that time. The 800 men employed by this road. Including the machine shops and office force, will be all transferred to Gary in time. Big Shops Acarly -Completed. It is said the big yards now located near Gary are nearly completed and some of the train crews will be trans-! ferred to that place immediately. In time, over thirty-eight train crews will be located at that place, but it is he intention of the railroad officials to keep a number of them at South Chicago, which are not included in that number. The transferring of the C, L. S. & E. shops to Gary will mean that at least 1,000 persons from South Chicago will locate in the new steel city. It also means that the monthly' payroll, amounting to about $200,000 will be a big loss to South Chicago merchants. Many of the head officials and members of the office force have been notified of the change and have commenced the erection' of new residencts at Gary, where, they, will make their future homes. The territory occupied by the Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern is owned by the Illinois Steel company, and as soon as , the yards have teen taken away the latter company will utilize it for purposes and will build other addi tions to their gigantic plant. Big Watson Rally at East Chicago Expected to Make Stir. COMMITTEE HARD AT WORK Music and Red Fire Will Help to Draw Large Crowds to the Meeting. East Chicago, Ind., Oct. 14. Preparations for the big Watson rally in this city on next Saturday evening will be discussed at a meeting of the Young Men's Republican club in the headquarters on Olcott avenue tliis even ing. Everyone is invited. Don't let the cool evening keep you away from this important meeting as the meeting room will be warm and your enthusiasm is needed to help make the meeting a success. The members are doing everything in their power to show that East Chicago can put forth their best foot in the entertainment of the state's next governor. The plans of the committees now provide for a mamoth street parade in which delegations from Hammond, Whiting, Gary. Indiana Harbor, Crown Point and Gibson are expected to participate. The Gibson "Taft club" will send a large delegation, it is understood, and their presence will be of material assistance in making the rally a big success. The contribution committee are doing efficient work In collecting the necessary funds with which to complete the preparations for the meeting. The Lewis skating rink, which has been closed for the past two days, will be in readiness for the big rally and Watson will be able to look into the faces of a veritable sea of staunch republicans, whose votes have already been awarded him, and democrats whose votes can be won by his persuasive and sound, logical arguments. At 6;30 o'clock on Saturday evening a quantity of red fire will be burned in the vacant lot opposite the city park property. It is predicted that this will draw the people from their homes, and under the swaying impulse of the music will participate in one of the largest street parades ever held in this city. Members of the organization should be particularly sure to attend tonight's meeting as upon their attendance de mands the ultimate success of the mammoth undertaking. Individual work can only attain collective results and your attendance at the republican headquarters this evening is demanded. Nuff sed! , given in the Calumet EARLY FOR SUCH

lated Suitcase and Empty Pouch. RICH MACEDONIAN IS MISSING Body May Be in the Calumet Biver or Have Been Placed in a Passing Box Car. What appears to be the deepest kind of a mystery developed yesterday when a multiiated suit case was found on the Lake Shore tracks, and besides u aid a pouch, the type generally used by foreigners for money. Letters fnside of the case containing the superscription of Nikola Yaranoka, a Macedonian identified this man as the owner of the articles. The man, however, cannot be found and it is the theory that the man has been robbed and possibly murdered. The circumstances present as thrilling a case to work on as the police have had to deal with in a long time. Letters from Chicago bankers to the man are evidence that he must have been a foreigner of some standing. In the suit case were clothes, such as are worn by the highest class of foreigners. The suit case itself was badly multiiated, ' although it was evident that it had not been run over by atrain. Beside the suit case was the emptymoney pouch. Although there were fresh tracks in the sand, it was impossible to discern any blood or evidence of a struggle. . Where the owner Yaranoka could be . is a puzzler. It is not probable that the suit case could have, dropped from a train on which he was riding as there were several letters addressed to Gary which showed conclusively that he had been in this city for sometime. It is likely that while he lived with a colony of Turks who have settled on the northeast side of the town in a camp by themselves. If the man had Just returned from -Chicago from this bank it is probable that he had considerable money with him and this fact became known, to his companions. The scene of the finding of the articles is buta short distance away from where' Vassili Gristii was -murdered .with a . hatchet some time ago. The belief Is that he could have been murdered and his body thrown in the Calumet river or placed In a box car of a passing train and that if that was the case It is plausible that they would not have heard of it by this . time. Chief Martin will have the letters translated today and follow the case up. A sequel to the mystery came in the

form of a visit on the part of a peculiar man to the Bretsch law office and claimed that he had lost a bank book with 180,000,000 or $90,000,000 in iL He' offered to give Mr. Bretsch $45,000.000 it he could find the bank book. He left a name which corresponds to that which was on the letters which were found in the suit case and gave an address in Chicago. Tnis leads the police to believe that the man who lost the suit case is the man who appeared in Mr. Bretsch's office. Bretsch did not pay any more at
tention to the fellow and it was found Impossible to locate him this morning after he had left the office. "SPECIAL" 10 THE HUB Preparations for the Crown Point Rally are Nearing Completion. It has now been definitely ; decided to have a special train leave Hammond at 1:30 p. m. for Crown Point on the occasion of the barbecue and Watson meeting which will be held there on next Saturday, the 17th of October. The special will consist of five coaches and will carry people from the entire northern part of the county to the big down-countv celebration. It will return in time to bring the entire party back to Hammond in time to take the street cars, which will be chartered and ready, and will carry the whole party to East Chicago, where they will help to . make the Watson meeting there a success. Dan Enright, who heads a commit tee of three which has charge of the hiring of the special, has telegraphed to Cleveland for the train, and there is no question that it can be secured. Already there have been many inquiries all over this part of the county rgarding the barbecQe and the plans of the republicans for the event, , and this makes it aparent that there will be a large crowd from this, part of the county. There are a great many people who tried their best to hear Mr. Watson here and were unable to do so.1 These people have signified their intention of going to Crown Point and engaging in the fun of a barbecue there. ' ' Watch For Results. ; Chief Martin and Sergeant -Catey. fearing that the fire which seemed to approach rapidly, "would imperil the city, drove to the scene to watch it. and see that city was menaced by the danger. At that time, however, the fire was across the river and it did not seem likely that it would get across. It was reported at 9 o'clock last night, however, that many box cars, which, were on the siding at the sand pit, had caught on fire and that there was no engine in the vicinity to save these which had not caught fire.
