One. of the most stinging blows ad

ministered to illjam, Jennings BryanJ

Is one that come yesterday from William Prentiss, former member of the Chicago civil service commissicti, when he repudiated his former leader and denounced him as an "associate of "train robbers." Mr. Prentiss who, for many years has been an active and leading democrat: and who has always been regarded as a staunch Bryan suporter, declres that the alliances into which the Nebraskan has permitted himself to.be drawn, show that Jie is not the high-minded defender of the people's interests that he has been supposed to be,, but that he is merely a political schemer, whose sole purpose is to get himself elected to office.' Refused Nomination. It was Mr. Prentiss, who, resentful at the Roger Sullivan dictation in the democratic state convention of 1904 the occasion for the famous "train robber" speech withdrew his name as a candidate for the nomination of gov

ernor, declaring that he would accept no nomination at the hands of such a convention. "I have never been satisfied since the Denver convention," writes Mr. Prentiss in a letter to Archie M. Augustine of Normal, 111. "Some of the papers printed a purported interview with me favoring Bryaf. and Kern, but it was - unauthorized." Among other things, Mr. Prentiss in the same letter says: Politics Merely a Game. "I never could look upon politics merely as a game. I never looked upon the man who could most smoothly deceive the people and betroy them as the best politician. I knew that political dishonesty had been the chief cause of the decay of republics of the past, and I believed, as I still do, that political honesty alone can save us from a like fate. Experience had forced vupon me the unwelcome truth that very many of the most brilliant of our public men were insincere merely playing a game.
